Update: Cavanaugh won’t be rejoining UH staff

By Dave Reardon on December 18, 2017

I spoke briefly with Mike Cavanaugh this morning. I asked him point-blank if he might be returning to the University of Hawaii football coaching staff. “I’m not talking about all that stuff, any of that business stuff,” Cavanaugh said. “But I love all of you. Mele Kalikimaka.” A couple of hours after this initial post, a source close to the situation told me Cavanaugh will not be joining the UH staff. Too bad. While it was a longshot, it would’ve […]

Mata’afa named Polynesian college player of year

By Dave Reardon on December 12, 2017

Hercules Mata’afa became the second Polynesian College Football Player of the Year from a Hawaii high school in the four years of the award’s existence today. Mata’afa, a defensive lineman from Lahainaluna who plays for Washington State, joins Marcus Mariota (Saint Louis School/Oregon, 2014), Ronnie Stanley (Notre Dame, 2015) and Sefo Liufau (Colorado, 2016) as a recipient of the award given by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. The fourth-year junior was named the Pac-12 conference’s Defensive Player of the […]

Clickbait warning: UH vs. FSU in Hawaii Bowl

By Dave Reardon on December 3, 2017

Yeah, it’s actually that other UH … the University of Houston, not the University of Hawaii. The other team is Fresno State University, not Florida State University. With a 3-9 record, Hawaii was way short of bowl eligibility — even in these days of allowing teams with records under .500 to play in postseason. The Bulldogs (9-4) vs. the Cougars (7-4) actually looks like a pretty good matchup — not bad considering what passes for bowl teams these days. The […]

Looking forward to a new role

By Dave Reardon on November 30, 2017

My duties at the Star-Advertiser are changing, effective very soon. I will still be writing about sports, but it will be as a trends/feature/investigative/analysis reporter and no longer as a regular columnist. Some of the stories will be long-form or series and some will involve multi-platform presentation and there will be some projects. It’s still taking shape, but it looks like an exciting opportunity to dig deep into big stories and find some hidden ones and bring them to light. […]

All-time short guy MLB team

By Dave Reardon on October 22, 2017

This is almost off the top of my head, in honor of Jose Altuve. No science to it, just trying to compile a list of short guys who played in the majors, preferably with distinction. Interesting how some guys looked shorter than they actually were (Tim Lincecum, Pedro Martinez come to mind). I always thought Craig Biggio was shorter than his listed 5-11. Same with Jimmy Wynn. Maybe Astros looked shorter because they played indoors. I’m sure there are many […]

Babers outtakes

By Dave Reardon on October 19, 2017

The 45 minutes I got to talk with Dino Babers on Tuesday morning resulted in some of the most enjoyable conversation I’ve had with anyone in a long time. The Syracuse football coach with the strong Hawaii ties is a breath of fresh air. Quite a bit of what we talked about didn’t make it into Wednesday’s column, so here are some of the leftovers. Our conversation was mostly about Babers’ connections to the islands. “Outside of game-day at Aloha […]

Oklahoma falls in poll after loss to Iowa State

By Dave Reardon on October 9, 2017

Here’s how I voted in this week’s Associated Press college football poll, with some additional information about who these teams have beaten and who they play this week. I really wanted to vote for Iowa State somewhere in the poll since the Cyclones knocked off Oklahoma. But how do you do that when Oklahoma beat Ohio State, which is getting into full gear now? Three voters — Kellis Robinett, Chris Murray and Gary Horowitz — did vote for ISU, 23rd […]

AP college football ballot, after Week 5

By Dave Reardon on October 2, 2017

For about five seconds on Saturday, I thought about putting Georgia at No. 1. Then I remembered what Oklahoma did to Ohio State, and saw Clemson and Alabama play in the late games. This week’s “OK, I was wrong:” Yes, Washington State took advantage of an overrated USC,and at home, but we’re now at a point where 5-0 with a win against a very talented but flawed team means quite a bit. This week’s “Maybe I am on to something:” […]
