McDonald’s starting debut best by a UH run-and-shoot QB

By Dave Reardon on August 26, 2018

Before Cole McDonald on Saturday at Colorado State, only three other University of Hawaii quarterbacks were on the winning side in their first start in the run-and-shoot offense. And Jason Whieldon is the only besides McDonald to achieve that in UH’s first game of the season. The other two — debut winners in midseason — were Shane Austin and David Graves. Austin is the only besides McDonald to win on the road in his first chance to start. In the […]

All UH sports events for Thursday 8/22 and Friday 8/23 canceled

By Dave Reardon on August 22, 2018

All UH Manoa athletic events scheduled for Thursday and Friday are canceled due to the approaching storm, according to a press release from the school in an email form UH athletic director David Matlin. A decision on athletic events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will be made depending upon weather conditions and facility availability, also according to the release.

More run-and-shoot: Mouse’s offense clicked

By Dave Reardon on August 19, 2018

Warning: This “Quick Reads” entry is not a quick read, it’s pretty long. Our three-day inspection of the run-and-shoot starts in today’s Star-Advertiser, and in researching it, I found an incredible amount of interesting stuff that we couldn’t fit into the print stories. Here’s more background about Mouse Davis’ role in changing football — in Hawaii and everywhere else — from Mouse himself, and one of his high school players in Oregon 50 years ago who without the run-and-shoot would […]

VIDEO: Walk-on QB makes most of his reps

By Dave Reardon on July 31, 2018

Like several of the other University of Hawaii quarterbacks in camp, Justin Uahinui is learning his third offensive system in as many years. The second-year freshman walk-on from Farrington played in a version of the West Coast offense as a Govs senior and learned the RPO (run-pass option) last year at UH. Now, it’s the run-and-shoot. “We were run-heavy (in high school),” he said. “A lot of people were surprised I continued at quarterback (in college), but I get a […]

Holly says this is the right place … and this could be his time

By Dave Reardon on July 27, 2018

Freddie Holly III is gone … sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. It’s just that the University of Hawaii running back with loads of potential would like to be known as Fred from now on rather than Freddie. After an off-season of discontent for some (former) Warriors, Holly’s happiness to be here never waned — and on Friday he was elated with the start of practice. “When I talk to my family I always say there’s no place I’d rather […]

Recent concussion research allows many to get moving sooner

By Dave Reardon on March 31, 2018

David Matlin remembers being dazed when he was hit in the head by a pitched baseball in a game nearly 40 years ago. He didn’t know then he’d just incurred a concussion. All he knew was he wanted to stay in the game. Back then, the closest thing to the baseline testing of today was someone, often a coach and not a trained medical professional, asking you how many fingers he was holding in front of your face. “I guessed […]

Mariota to attend Poly Hall events

By Dave Reardon on January 15, 2018

For fans of Marcus Mariota in Hawaii, there’s a silver lining to his Tennessee Titans losing their playoff game against the New England Patriots on Saturday. Since he doesn’t have a game to prepare for this week, Mariota can return home in time to attend the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame ceremonies. The Titans quarterback from Honolulu is scheduled to attend the enshrinement celebration dinner Friday, and the Polynesian Bowl Saturday at Aloha Stadium, according to PFHOF spokesman Phil Hetu. […]

My vote: Bama No. 1, UCF No. 2

By Dave Reardon on January 8, 2018

I considered it briefly, but was not one of the four Associated Press College Football Poll voters to put the only undefeated team in FBS at No. 1 in the final poll. I put UCF at No. 2, right after the winner of the four-team playoff to which it had no access. I was tempted to put the Knights at No. 1 to make a statement that the tournament really should be an eight-team affair. But I am convinced that […]
