Crunching Numbers: Battle of “island” teams

By Dave Reardon on December 26, 2018

Ever see a basketball game where the teams had the same number of assists, turnovers and rebounds? If you watched Hawaii’s 68-60 win against Rhode Island on Christmas in the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic you have. Assists: 10 for both. Turnovers: 11 for both. Rebounds: 35 for both. Even the offensive-defensive split for the caroms was identical at 11-24. I had to look at the stat sheet a couple of times to make sure it […]

Double downer for UH fans

By Dave Reardon on December 22, 2018

The University of Hawaii went 0-for-2 today in nationally televised games. Hawaii led at halftime of both, but fell 73-59 to UNLV in basketball at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and then 31-14 tonight in football, at the SoFi Hawaii Bowl. David and Teri Loui were among the dedicated UH fans who did the double dip and attended both games. “It was fortunate that my friend had to set up (the tailgate) for the football game,” the man known […]

Cordeiro does it again. Should he start?

By Dave Reardon on November 17, 2018

The University of Hawaii football team just completed one of the more stirring comeback victories in recent memory, and with a lot on the line. Led by a dominant second-half defense and true freshman Chevan Cordeiro‘s three touchdown passes in less than one quarter of play, UH beat UNLV 35-28 and clinched a berth in the Hawaii Bowl. The Rebels led 21-6 at halftime and it was 28-13 when Cordeiro replaced third-year sophomore Cole McDonald with about 12 minutes left […]

Note from an equipment manager (1956-60)

By Dave Reardon on November 13, 2018

Sunday’s stories about football managers spurred this response from a reader and reminds us that unsung heroes have been making sports events possible for a very long time: Thank you for The Longest Day article. It brought back many memories from long ago when I was both a basketball and baseball manager for the Washington Huskies. It was much simpler in my time, 1956-1960. Basketball, we traveled with 12 players, 3 coaches, 1 trainer and a manager. My senior manager […]

Manuwai remembered for his deeds, others’ words

By Dave Reardon on November 4, 2018

That description of gentle giant gets thrown around a lot when we talk about behemoth football players. And it is true that Vince Manuwai, who died Sunday at age 38, was very big and very kind. One of his teammates, defensive back Jacob Espiau, put it best. “Never been picked up and mauled so bad by an O-lineman in my life. Then picked up and given a hug. We lost a super good braddah,” Espiau posted on Facebook upon the […]

Aggies run over Rainbow Warriors

By Dave Reardon on November 3, 2018

This one was over early. It wasn’t much of a surprise to most that No. 18 Utah State had few problems clobbering a reeling Hawaii team 56-17 on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The Aggies blasted out to a 28-3 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way. It’s hard to believe the Rainbow Warriors, with four losses in a row, still have a winning record (6-5). After next week’s bye, they have two chances left — at home against […]

Crunching Numbers: 6-2 still looks good

By Dave Reardon on October 14, 2018

Since the University of Hawaii started playing football in 1909, it has started the season with a 6-2 record 15 times, including the current team. In 1920 and 1962, UH also finished at 6-2, since it only played eight games. Incidentally, in ’62, opponents included teams such as the Kaimuki Spartans and Tantalus Rangers. In ’20, one loss was to Outrigger Canoe Club, which hasn’t been on the schedule in a very long time. But the other team Hawaii lost […]

Cougars maul Warriors

By Dave Reardon on October 13, 2018

It was an intriguing matchup going in: A slumping Brigham Young team hosting an overachieving Hawaii squad. But the Cougars took the mystery out of it early, scoring the game’s first four touchdowns on the way to a 49-23 rout after two disappointing losses. UH (6-2) is now 0-10 on the road against BYU (4-3), and will have to wait until at least next week’s home game against Nevada to clinch a bowl game spot. Six-foot-nine defender Corbin Kaufusi was […]
