Live football blog: Hawaii vs. Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2019

Cesar Silva nails a 37-yard field goal as time expires to deliver Fresno State a 41-38 victory over Hawaii tonight at Aloha Stadium. It was the Bulldogs’ sixth consecutive victory over the Warriors in the 50th State. * * * * * Chevan Cordeiro scrambles and sheds a would-be tackler for a 10-yard TD to tie it at 38 with 1:08 to play. The drive began when Darius Muasau recovered an onside kick, and was extended on a roughing penalty […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Fresno State

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

On a Friday night in Halawa in October of 2001, it was peak Hawaii-Fresno State. “Magic” it would be described by no fewer than two sportswriters. Of the 51 all-time meetings between the Rainbow Warriors and the Bulldogs going into tonight’s clash at Aloha Stadium, none may be better remembered on the Hawaii side than the Oct. 6, 2001 encounter (with apologies to the overtime clash in 1999 and the 2007 battle, among others). Rolovich. Lelie. Jackson. Those were just […]

Hawaii football: Allow Kumoku Noa to reintroduce himself

By Christian Shimabuku on October 30, 2019

Kumoku Noa reintroduced himself to Hawaii football fans in a big way during last Saturday’s win at New Mexico. In his first game action since 2017, he broke away for a 54-yard touchdown from Cole McDonald in the first quarter, setting the tone in a much-needed 45-31 victory. Noa was not cleared for any other game this season in what was described to Star-Advertiser UH football beat writer Stephen Tsai as “ailments and personal problems.” The Rainbow Warriors held a […]

Hawaii football: quarterback Cole McDonald plans to ‘come back next year’

By Dave Reardon on October 29, 2019

Cole McDonald went a long way on that 76-yard touchdown run in Saturday’s 45-31 victory at New Mexico. But Hawaii’s fourth-year junior quarterback said after practice Tuesday he has no plan — at least at this point — of going any distance from the UH roster before his senior season. “I intend to stay in school and come back next year,” McDonald said. Of course a lot can change between now and next spring and the NFL Draft. And at […]

Rainbow Forecast: Huge week for Hawaii football, volleyball, soccer; basketball teams host exhibitions

By Brian McInnis on October 28, 2019

As fate would have it, this week aligned for Hawaii’s three primary fall sports in one sense — all three face pivotal conference matchups that have championship implications. Football, coming off its 45-31 win at New Mexico — the first time UH won in Albuquerque since 1987 — hits the crucial portion of its schedule starting this week with the first of four Mountain West West Division opponents, rival Fresno State. If UH (5-3, 2-2 MWC) manages to win out in those […]

AP College Football Poll: Most No. 1 votes doesn’t always make you No. 1

By Dave Reardon on October 27, 2019

More of the 62 voters in the AP Top 25 college football poll picked Alabama as the best team in the country after Saturday’s games. But LSU is ranked No. 1. How can that be? Two reasons: Ohio State and Clemson. Alabama got 21 first-place votes. LSU received 17 (including mine). Ohio State got 17, too, and Clemson, the preseason No. 1, garnered the remaining seven. Without having seen the other ballots yet, we can infer Alabama is a couple […]

Hawaii football rides hot start to 45-31 win at New Mexico

By Warrior World on October 26, 2019

With the possibility of postseason play exiting the stage with a loss, Hawaii knew today’s football game at New Mexico was a must win. And that’s exactly what the Rainbow Warriors did, 45-31 over the Lobos in the hosts’ 95th homecoming game in Albuquerque, N.M. The victory leveled Hawaii’s Mountain West Conference record at 2-2 and raised its overall mark to 5-3, still two wins shy of playing during the holidays. The Lobos dropped to 2-6 for the season and […]

Live football blog: Hawaii at New Mexico

By Stephen Tsai on October 26, 2019

Ikem Okeke intercepts a Tevaka Tuioti pass at the threshold of the goal line to seal Hawaii’s 45-31 victory over New Mexico. The Warriors improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain West. * * * * * The Lobos are now down 45-31 following Tevaka Tuioti’s 59-yard pass to Jordan Kress with 4:03 to play. Replays showed Kress had stepped out of bounds, but, oh, well. The Warriors entered the fourth quarter with a 38-10 lead. * * […]
