Hawaii women’s basketball: Laura Beeman receives 3-year extension

By Brian McInnis on January 17, 2020

Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman has been granted a three-year contract extension, Hawaii Warrior World has learned. Beeman, whose existing contract was set to expire after the 2020-21 season, is now contracted through the 2023-24 season. UH is expected to make an official announcement today. UH has reached the postseason five times (1 NCAA, 4 WNIT) since Beeman took over in in the 2012-13 season, including a WNIT appearance in the 2018-19 season after the Rainbow Wahine reached the […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Junior Madut playing catch-up with Rainbow Warriors

By Brian McInnis on January 16, 2020

It’s not as simple as plug and play. Junior Madut is here, with the Rainbow Warriors, at last, and by all accounts he’s been a fruitful addition to the team over the last few weeks. And while you might spot the lithe 6-foot-5 guard in practice or on the Hawaii bench during games, it’s not likely you’ll see him suited up on the court in the immediate future. That’s expected to be the case again for UH (10-6, 1-1 Big […]

Hawaii football: Nick Rolovich officially introduced at Washington State

By Brian McInnis on January 16, 2020

One moment earned applause louder than all the rest at Nick Rolovich’s introductory press conference at Washington State’s Martin Stadium on Thursday afternoon. “Three-one-seven,” Rolovich, the former Hawaii head coach and quarterback, answered to a question about the Apple Cup. He paused dramatically before elaborating, “That’s the number of days until we get to play it.” The Apple Cup is the annual rivalry game between WSU and Washington, which has gone seven straight (and 10 of the last 11) to […]

Hawaii football: Nick Rolovich thanks UH, Rainbow Warriors’ fan base

By Brian McInnis on January 15, 2020

In the wake of the breaking news of Nick Rolovich’s hire at Washington State on Monday, he was selective on social media. Quiet, even. Some people wondered if Rolovich would acknowledge those he left behind as he moved on to a bigger, Power Five conference like the Pac-12. It was a topic of conversation on the radio on Wednesday. Wednesday night came the answer. Rolovich tweeted out a thank-you to the University of Hawaii and its fan base. He wrote: […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Stefan Jankovic joins Noah Allen on G League’s Capital City Go-Go

By Brian McInnis on January 15, 2020

Two of the last Hawaii basketball All-Big West first-teamers were separated by just a year, and still never got to play with each other. Stefan Jankovic and Noah Allen get to now. Jankovic (2014-15, 15-16) and Allen (2016-17) are professional teammates as of this week, as Jankovic was picked up by the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA’s G League. Allen has been with the Go-Go since last year. “It’s crazy because when I signed here I was saying I […]

Hawaii water polo: Rainbow Wahine open season ranked No. 6

By Brian McInnis on January 15, 2020

The Hawaii water polo team opens the 2020 season this weekend with a No. 6 ranking in the country. However, based on the CWPA poll released Wednesday, someone else — No. 5 UC Irvine — is narrowly favored to win the Big West this year. Defending BWC champion Hawaii, which made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015 last spring, opens the season with the four-team Rainbow Invite this weekend. It starts with No. 12 Loyola Marymount at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic […]

Hawaii football: LSU’s Joe Burrow breaks Colt Brennan’s records; Dave Aranda wins national title

By Brian McInnis on January 13, 2020

It was a banner night for No. 1 LSU and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow slung five touchdown passes and ran for one more as LSU defeated No. 3 Clemson 42-25 in the College Football Playoff championship on Monday night. In the process, he broke former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan’s records for passing touchdowns (58) and touchdowns responsible for (63) from the 2006 season. Burrow, who entered the night with 55 passing TDs and 59 responsible for, tied Brennan […]

Hawaii men’s volleyball: James Anastassiades mindful of little things in filling big role

By Brian McInnis on January 12, 2020

As James Anastassiades made the rounds of the Stan Sheriff Center lower bowl, greeting fans and well-wishers, he cradled something tight. It was the Raising Cane’s Rainbow Warrior Classic championship trophy, and a symbol of a special night personally. Anastassiades, the consummate supporting teammate for the better part of his five-year UH career, got a rare turn in the spotlight Saturday. Go-to senior hitter Colton Cowell, who appeared dressed and ready to play, was scratched after suffering an apparent injury […]
