Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 7

By Brian McInnis on March 7, 2019

It’s quite a busy Thursday around the Manoa lower campus. Quite a busy week, actually. For the precise breakdown, check out Jason Kaneshiro’s post here. I’ll do my best to provide updates spanning UH men’s and women’s basketball (both on the road), and will be rotating from site to site between UH softball against Cal (6 p.m. projected start), UH baseball against Oregon (6:35 start), and UH men’s volleyball against King University (7 p.m. start). Live updates below. ———————— Next […]

Rainbow Wahine basketball: Good byes on road, goodbye to home

By Brian McInnis on March 7, 2019

The Hawaii women’s basketball team would like nothing more than to say hello to good byes after this week (to borrow that old slogan from PriceBusters). UH (12-15, 8-6 Big West) clinched at least a first-round bye on Wednesday night when UC Irvine, the team just behind the Rainbow Wahine, lost to Cal State Northridge, meaning UH can do no worse than the 4 seed. The Wahine can do much better if they can find it within themselves to win […]

Rainbow Warrior basketball: Defending Big West position

By Brian McInnis on March 5, 2019

To defend its present position in the Big West Conference, the Hawaii basketball team will have to find a way to defend, and do it in hostile territory. It’s no secret that defense has been the Rainbow Warriors’ greatest shortcoming over their three-game losing streak. Over that span, UH has given up 83.7 points per game and .514 (92-for-179) field-goal shooting in road losses to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, and Cal State Northridge on senior night on Saturday. […]

Rainbow Warrior basketball: Seniors left wanting

By Brian McInnis on March 3, 2019

Jack Purchase came out like a ball of fire. Brocke Stepteau couldn’t miss. And Sheriff Drammeh, hampered by an injury, sucked it up and tried to provide the kind of intangible play he was known for throughout his Hawaii basketball career. And yet, the three Hawaii basketball seniors were unable to will their team to victory on senior night against Cal State Northridge, a young team on the rise as the Rainbow Warriors fall back to the pack. Terrell Gomez […]

Rainbow Wahine basketball: 4 seniors bid farewell

By Brian McInnis on March 2, 2019

UPDATE: The Rainbow Wahine put together one of their best and most well-rounded performances in a 70-55 win over Fullerton. As noted in Saturday’s print edition of the Star-Advertiser, senior night is a big night for the Hawaii women’s basketball team and its four outgoing players. The Rainbow Wahine (11-15, 7-6 Big West) have a chance to redefine the 2018-19 season if they can put something solid together against Cal State Fullerton (13-13, 5-8) in this “White-out” game at 3 […]

Rainbow Warrior tennis: Ilagan bursts onto scene

By Brian McInnis on February 28, 2019

Andre Ilagan is being heard. His play on the tennis court, of course, has been loud for some time now. You don’t emerge from Kalihi to become two-time state singles champion in a sound vacuum. But lately, it’s been Ilagan’s vocalization between the lines that’s represented his leap to the next level. “My dad told me never to yell because he thought it was bad. I’m pretty sure it was bad before,” Ilagan said after his most recent match for […]

Swimming and diving has it all come together

By Brian McInnis on February 26, 2019

Last weekend went swimmingly for Hawaii, to say the least. The UH swimming and diving teams are coming off a program first — a sweep of the men’s and women’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team championships at La Miranda (swimming) and Mission Viejo (diving) in California. In swimming, the MPSF is comprised of schools who are otherwise in the Big West and West Coast Conferences. The Rainbow Wahine beat runner-up UC Davis 781.50 to 613.50 for their third straight MPSF title […]

Hawaii basketball teams lick wounds

By Brian McInnis on February 24, 2019

Taken in concert, that was a wallop of a week for the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine entered it with identical 7-4 records in the Big West Conference. In the case of the Warriors, that was good for third place, behind only UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton, with five games to play. In the case of the Wahine, it was even better — good for a tie for second place with Cal State […]
