Rainbow Warrior volleyball: Finding a way

By Brian McInnis on April 5, 2019

UC Santa Barbara brought the block to the party. Hawaii supplied everything else Friday night. The rollicking Rainbow Warriors were turned back at the net more times against the Gauchos than at any other point in 2019, and it hardly mattered in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of the visitors in front of a raucous, season-high turnstile crowd of 6,969. Top-ranked UH (24-0) extended its record season set streak to 72 and has its first sellout crowd since 1997 to […]

Rainbow Warriors basketball: Critical juncture

By Brian McInnis on March 21, 2019

Kick back, relax and take in one of the best sports days of the year today. Heck, do it again tomorrow, and through the rest of March as the madness unfolds. When you do, consider this: It’s already been three years since the Hawaii men’s basketball team enjoyed its finest hour on the national stage, upsetting No. 4 seed California in the NCAA Tournament first round in Spokane, Wash. Roderick Bobbitt, Stefan Jankovic and Aaron Valdes, and a host of […]

Rainbow Wahine basketball headed to Saint Mary’s in WNIT

By Brian McInnis on March 18, 2019

For its second straight WNIT appearance and for the third time in 10 overall showings in the event, the Hawaii women’s basketball team has been dispatched to Moraga, Calif., to face Saint Mary’s in the opening round. UH (15-16) and the Gaels of the West Coast Conference (20-11) will meet on Friday at a time to be announced. The winner of that game will face Cal Baptist or Pepperdine in the second round. BREAKING: 2019 Postseason #WNIT first-round matchups released! […]

Rainbow Wahine softball gets through gauntlet alive

By Brian McInnis on March 17, 2019

It was a grueling 11 days and 12 games. The Hawaii softball team survived that gauntlet — its last competition before Big West play begins — by going 7-5, thereby completing its nonconference slate at 19-9. Two of the losses were to No. 4 Alabama, one was a one-run defeat to Utah and one came at the hands of Cal ace Kamalani Dung. The last was to SIU-Edwardsville, a team with three local players from which UH took two of […]

Hawaii-USC water polo worth price of admission

By Brian McInnis on March 17, 2019

The admission was free, as is policy for Hawaii water polo matches at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. But the match Saturday between the Rainbow Wahine and No. 1 USC was notable for a couple of reasons. Reasons enough that you probably could’ve gotten people to pay to get in, had you been so inclined. Of course, that’s a tongue-in-cheek statement, given what happened earlier this week. But, in all seriousness, there were some genuinely compelling things in play here. […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 16

By Brian McInnis on March 16, 2019

In terms of variety and quantity, it’s the day of days for Hawaii sports on the Manoa lower campus. Softball against Niagara and No. 4 Alabama. Baseball against Cal State Bakersfield. Water polo against the top-ranked team in the country, USC, that made some headlines lately (you might’ve heard about it). Men’s volleyball against Cal State Northridge. And beach volleyball just off campus at Queen’s Beach. And over in Southern California, the UH women’s basketball team playing UC Davis in […]

Rainbow Wahine basketball bound for WNIT after title defeat

By Brian McInnis on March 16, 2019

The wild ride of the 2018-19 Hawaii women’s basketball team isn’t over just yet. Shortly after its 58-50 loss to top-seeded UC Davis in the Big West championship game, UH announced that the Rainbow Wahine will make their 10th all-time appearance in the WNIT. With regular-season champion Davis taking the Big West tournament’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament, that freed up the Wahine, as the No. 2 seed, for inclusion in the 64-team WNIT. UH last participated in the […]
