Hawaii football: Chris Brown enjoys the show

By Brian McInnis on April 16, 2019

Blood and sweat. When Craig Stutzmann thinks about his playing days alongside Chris Brown, those substances come to mind. Vividly, too, as Brown, the former Rainbow Warrior standout linebacker (1999 to 2002), is back in town. The 39-year-old still resembles wrought iron in human form. “He’s tough as you-know-what,” said Stutzmann, one of a handful of members of the UH coaching staff (including head coach Nick Rolovich) who suited up with Brown. “Toughest guy that I know, mentally, physically. I […]

Rainbow Wahine water polo: Looking to contend

By Brian McInnis on April 13, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii defeated UC Santa Barbara 15-9 on senior night. UH sent its four seniors out with a home win and the Rainbow Wahine wrapped up the regular season at 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big West — clinching at least a share of the conference title. 🤙🏽🌈 Senior float to cap off a fun night! Rainbow Wahine softball: Heen’s blast takes UCSB opener

By Brian McInnis on April 12, 2019

For Bob Coolen and the Hawaii softball team, 1K is in play on Saturday. Callee Heen blasted a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning shortly after UH faced a rain delay — and a one-run deficit — against UC Santa Barbara on Friday night. It was the difference in a 4-1 win over the Gauchos, as UH (25-10, 6-1 Big West) moved ahead of idle Cal State Fullerton atop the Big West standings. Callee Heen with the three-run […]

Rainbow Wahine softball: Bob Coolen nears 1K at UH

By Brian McInnis on April 11, 2019

To have it happen here — at the place Bob Coolen helped build from the ground up and the field that he used to weed himself — would take a little doing. As it so happens, “doing” is something familiar to this year’s group of Rainbow Wahine. Hawaii (24-10, 5-1 Big West) can give its 28th-year head coach his 1,000th win at Manoa if it can sweep UC Santa Barbara (7-30, 1-5) in three games spanning Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, […]

Rainbow Warrior basketball: Leland Green finds a home

By Brian McInnis on April 10, 2019

Former Hawaii basketball guard Leland Green has found his greener land of opportunity. Green, a reserve who played an average of 8.7 minutes in 27 games in 2018-19, will play at Division II Humboldt State for his senior season. Because he is dropping down a division, he does not have to sit out a season. Green was a courteous, quiet sort who wowed upon his arrival from Los Angeles with a better-than-expected jump shot and a ready-made physique. He enjoyed […]

Rainbow Warrior football: 3-man weave

By Brian McInnis on April 9, 2019

The Hawaii football team is running a three-man weave from the pocket this spring. UH, which is about a third of the way through spring practices, is giving quarterbacks Cole McDonald, Chevan Cordeiro and Justin Uahinui all the work they could want as they sling ball after ball at receivers a few times a week. >> SPRING PRACTICE PHOTO GALLERY McDonald (3,875 yards, 36 TD, 10 INT), who is a fourth-year junior in 2019, was the primary signal-caller in the […]

Rainbow Warrior volleyball: ‘Set-back’ elicits response

By Brian McInnis on April 7, 2019

The Rainbow Warrior volleyball team’s “set-back” was no setback at all. It was probably inevitable that this top-ranked UH team, as good as it is in all facets, was going to drop a frame to someone at some point. And the capacity UH crowd recognized it, giving the ‘Bows a standing ovation between the third and fourth sets of a 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 win over the UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. “You don’t go in expecting you’ll beat everybody […]

Rainbow Wahine tennis: Seniors come through on their day

By Brian McInnis on April 6, 2019

The Hawaii women’s tennis seniors took matters into their own hands on their special day. Outgoing players Maayan Sela (No. 2 court), Roxanne Resma (No. 5) and Alzbeta Houbova (No. 6) won their singles matches to anchor the Rainbow Wahine’s 6-1 dual match win over Big West leader UC Santa Barbara at the UH tennis complex on Saturday. In the case of Sela and Resma, that required coming back from a set down against their opponent. Sela’s 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 […]
