Hawaii football: Ilm Manning engineers strong start to college career

By Brian McInnis on August 7, 2019

Ilm Manning pledged to make all aspects of his college career about learning, be it as an athlete or a mathlete. Manning jumped straight into the trenches as a true freshman at Hawaii last fall, earning the starting left tackle job for the duration of the 2018 season. So, too, did he plunge into the UH pre-engineering program, taking some difficult math and calculus courses in his first two semesters of college. “It is pretty challenging, all the calculus classes […]

Hawaii football: Linebacker Pritchard honors late teammate Scheyenne Sanitoa

By Brian McInnis on August 5, 2019

The hot sun beat down on player, coach, and reporter alike at the Manoa grass practice field on Monday. Understandably, linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard asked if he could strip off his pads before granting a post-practice interview request. When he shed the cumbersome gear, it revealed his undershirt — which bore a tribute to his late UH teammate Scheyenne Sanitoa. Sanitoa died on July 4, just over a month ago. Their bond was strong. Pritchard and Sanitoa had more in common […]

Hawaii football: James Phillips introduces himself to Aloha Stadium

By Brian McInnis on August 4, 2019

James Phillips made quite the first impression at Aloha Stadium. It was just a practice, sure, but there will only be a handful of those at the Rainbow Warriors’ home venue, at most, before the start of the 2019 season against Arizona on Aug. 24. UH went there Saturday morning because of the possibility of inclement weather on its grass practice field on campus. Phillips, a sophomore receiver who’s operated mostly at second-team depth, had two long touchdown catch-and-runs in […]

Hawaii football: Aloha Stadium scrimmage live blog (CANCELED)

By Brian McInnis on August 3, 2019

UPDATE: Well, sorry UH fans, per UH media access policy, we’re not able to live blog the scrimmage in person. We’ll try to give some general updates on Twitter. You can check out Stephen Tsai’s roundup of notes from the session. Christian Shimabuku was at the stadium, too, and wrote about coveted single-digit jersey numbers and how they must be earned. —————— We’ll be doing a live blog of Hawaii’s expected controlled scrimmage at Aloha Stadium this Saturday morning. UH […]

Hawaii football: Chevan Cordeiro right at home at Saint Louis

By Brian McInnis on August 2, 2019

You could feel it immediately upon stepping foot out of the parking structure at the Saint Louis and Chaminade University campus and onto the track bordering the artificial turf football field. The stiff breeze. “It’s always (like that),” said Hawaii redshirt freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, the 2017 state champion quarterback for the Crusaders. “(Thursday) when they said we were practicing at Saint Louis, everyone who practiced here before, played at Saint Louis knew it was going to be windy. It […]

Hawaii football: The Byrd is still the word

By Brian McInnis on August 1, 2019

At the end of Thursday morning’s practice, the Hawaii football team broke into position groups and began sprinting downfield one at a time — even the linemen — to haul in passes. Because of the entertainment and curiosity factors, there was almost no reason to watch the full-time UH receivers do their regular thing. Almost. In the final minutes, senior slotback Cedric Byrd II, seemingly without effort, hauled in a ball one-handed on the run, tightroping a sideline. “We had to […]

Hawaii football: Kai Kaneshiro straps up at nickelback

By Brian McInnis on July 31, 2019

Kai Kaneshiro’s natural instincts have been unleashed. Kaneshiro, a Saint Louis School graduate who’s in his second fall camp with Hawaii, is still a defensive back. But in the spring, the UH coaches switched him from cornerback to nickelback going into his redshirt freshman season. It boils down to proximity for the 6-foot-2 youngster with hybrid talents. “I actually really like the switch to be more closer to the ball. I’m always around it. I really like it,” Kaneshiro said […]
