Hawaii women’s volleyball: Middles expand options for Wahine

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2019

Talk about good problems to have. The Hawaii volleyball team displayed as balanced an attack as it has so far this young season in Sunday’s four-set defeat of previously unbeaten Denver in the Heineken Rainbow Wahine Invitational. With Sky Williams (10 kills, five blocks, tournament MVP) and Tiffany Westerberg (nine kills, .500 hitting) thriving in the middle to complement hitters Jolie Rasmussen, Brooke Van Sickle and Hanna Hellvig, UH had clean looks aplenty against the Pioneers. When UH (6-0) wasn’t […]

‘Bows in the Pros: Hawaii football alum Jahlani Tavai records sack in NFL debut

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2019

Jahlani Tavai made his presence felt for the Detroit Lions in his official NFL debut. The Lions’ second-round draft pick started at linebacker and made three solo tackles in Sunday’s 27-27 tie with the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. Most notably, he had a sack of reigning Heisman Trophy winner and top overall draft pick Kyler Murray in the third quarter. Hawaii soccer: Nagamine rues late lapses at North Dakota

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2019

Hawaii was well on its way to a 2-0 start to its three-game road trip through North and South Dakota and within moments of posting a fourth straight clean sheet — which would’ve qualified as the second-longest such streak in program history. Then the Rainbow Wahine hit a considerable snag. UH gave up an 88th-minute equalizer to North Dakota and faltered further in overtime, losing 2-1 to the Fighting Hawks on Sunday afternoon in Grand Forks, N.D. Mimi Eiden scored […]

VIDEO: Fourth quarter timeline of Hawaii football’s win over Oregon State

By Brian McInnis on September 7, 2019

Much like in Hawaii’s Week Zero win over Arizona, Saturday’s game against another Pac-12 team, Oregon State, was a tightly contested affair that came right down to the wire. UH and Oregon State both had chances in the fourth quarter, but in the end, only UH (2-0) made good on one in a 31-28 Rainbow Warriors victory. Here’s what happened in chronological fashion in what became a kickers’ duel. >> HAWAII VS. OREGON STATE PHOTO GALLERY ————— The teams entered […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Oregon State

By Brian McInnis on September 7, 2019

Much was different the first time Hawaii encountered today’s opponent, Oregon State, in football nearly a century ago. In this week’s edition of “UH Football Throwbacks,” World War I was five years removed. The iconic Central Union Church was brand new. The first aerial photograph of Mauna Loa was just taken. On the pigskin side of things, Hawaii’s nickname was the Fighting Deans, not the Rainbow Warriors. And Oregon State was not yet known as Oregon State, although they were […]

Hawaii soccer: UH records third straight shutout in win at North Dakota State

By Brian McInnis on September 6, 2019

The Hawaii soccer team successfully went five time zones over to blank another opponent. UH (2-2-1) made North Dakota State its third straight shutout victim and got the game-winner on a first-half header from forward Kelci Sumida in a 1-0 decision in Fargo on Friday night. Michele Nagamine was in a chipper mood during a postgame phone interview in the crisp, dry air of Fargo. It was the first time since the 2016 Big West season that UH blanked three […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Full 2019-20 schedule revealed

By Brian McInnis on September 5, 2019

Most of the Hawaii women’s basketball schedule was teased last week, but the full reveal came Thursday afternoon. UH opens it up at home — the second straight year it has done so after going on the road every year under Laura Beeman — on Sept. 5 against San Diego State. Highlights include home dates against North Carolina State and Texas in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 29-Dec.1) and a road trip to play Oregon State and Washington (Dec. 6 and […]

Hawaii football: Kaimana Padello gets a rush heading into Oregon State game

By Brian McInnis on September 4, 2019

Unlike a typical play in an opponent’s backfield, Kaimana Padello never had a chance. He never had a chance to watch his alma mater, Mililani High School, live in the stands at a football game in the time since he graduated in 2016. Until, that is, Hawaii’s bye on its schedule last week. The senior rush end took full advantage to go watch his Trojans take on Liberty High of Las Vegas last Friday while much of the rest of […]
