Hawaii athletics facilities: Long-awaited track rolled out

By Brian McInnis on October 2, 2019

For years in college track and field circles, the University of Hawaii was known for its signature rainbow-themed track. More recently, it was also known for the condition of said track. The rainbow had faded, literally and figuratively. The university recently completed a $2.05 million overhaul of its aging 17-year-old quarter-mile surface at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. It had been long overdue; most well-maintained tracks are replaced every eight to 10 years. The Rainbow Wahine had learned to […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Paul George carries memories of Sheriff Center

By Brian McInnis on October 2, 2019

When Paul George played at Fresno State in the late 2000s, both the Bulldogs and Hawaii struggled to contend in the Western Athletic Conference. UH and FSU, longtime conference rivals, actually made pretty good opponents for each other. Bob Nash’s ‘Bows had an explosive talent in Roderick Flemings and Fresno State had one of its own in a youngster named Paul George. But both squads struggled to make that translate into team success. >> VIDEO, PHOTOS OF CLIPPERS CAMP AT […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: New-look ‘Bows take to new floor

By Brian McInnis on September 29, 2019

It was fitting that the 2019-20 Hawaii men’s basketball team got in its first practice of the season on a brand-new floor. There was a new theme in the lineup, a new assistant coach, and six new players on the roster to go with the sparkling court in the Stan Sheriff Center in the first full practice of the 2019-20 preseason on Saturday. Fifth-year coach Eran Ganot is going with a “go big or go home” theme to begin the […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Nevada

By Brian McInnis on September 28, 2019

The elements — rain and chilly weather in altitude — were brought up more than once this week as Hawaii prepared to take on Nevada in the Rainbow Warriors’ Mountain West opener. Some of those factors have contributed to the Warriors’ struggles in Reno’s Mackay Stadium in the past — UH is 1-8 there all-time entering today’s ESPN2-televised contest (4:30 p.m. HST). In one meeting in particular, a meeting on Nov. 15, 2003, the elements seemed to get the better of the ‘Bows. […]

Hawaii football: Gene Pryor finds groove at right tackle

By Brian McInnis on September 27, 2019

Gene Pryor’s first coming-out party with Hawaii football happened a few months ago, when he competed in a dance-off to win possession of the ball for his team in the Rainbow Warriors’ spring scrimmage. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Pryor pulled off “The Worm” to defeat Jonah Laulu. Hawaii basketball: Rainbow Warriors, Wahine get in 2019-20 media day

By Brian McInnis on September 26, 2019

Thursday was the annual media day for the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. All Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine players and coaches got together for team photos and the Rainbow Warriors’ players broke away for individual and group shots and interviews. The Rainbow Wahine held their first full practice on Wednesday. The Rainbow Warriors get going on Saturday. The UH men, under fifth-year coach Eran Ganot, open their season Nov. 8 vs. Florida A&M in the Rainbow Classic. The […]

Hawaii football: Smart looks to make heady plays in Mountain West

By Brian McInnis on September 26, 2019

A breakout offensive game for Hawaii wide receiver Jared Smart included a couple of notable miscues. The 6-foot junior transfer from Laney (Calif.) College is looking to build on one and eliminate the other heading into the Rainbow Warriors’ Mountain West opener at Nevada this weekend. Smart had his most productive receiving game to as a Warrior to date against Central Arkansas last Saturday, with eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown, helping UH improve to 3-1 on the […]

Hawaii women’s tennis: Melounova breaks ground at ITA tournament

By Brian McInnis on September 26, 2019

Melounova, an All-American and the three-time Big West player of the year, opens her senior season at the Oracle ITA Masters tournament that is underway at Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. She is the first Wahine player to go to the fifth-year tourney. It’s a special early-season invitational for returning conference players of the year, plus other highly ranked players.
