Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Air Force

By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2019

Today’s potentially pivotal Mountain West matchup between Hawaii and Air Force could be the latest in a series of close battles between the Rainbow Warriors and the Falcons throughout their history, which stretches back to 1966. Nine times in a 21-game series have UH and the AFA played within a touchdown of each other. In today’s edition of the Throwbacks, we’re focusing on one of those typical nail-biters for the Kuter Trophy — Nov. 26, 1988. The Rainbow Warriors were charmed […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Wahine show off new killer instinct

By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2019

Whatever was said in the three-hour post-match meeting between coach Robyn Ah Mow and her players up at San Luis Obispo, Calif., seems to have made a lasting impression. UH made short work of UC Riverside on Friday night, rolling through the Highlanders in 86 minutes, 25-17, 25-18, 25-12. Norene Iosia had a potent double-double (19 digs, 17 assists), Amber Igiede put down 11 kills on 14 swings and Hanna Hellvig and McKenna Ross added 10 kills apiece. Sky Williams […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Young guns pressed into service

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2019

Kameron Ng saw an opening. He sprinted upcourt, the ball at his fingertips. The defense was far from set. An opening presented itself on the left side of the lane. The guard pressed his advantage and, once the defense collapsed, he noticed the weak-side defender covered down, toward the basket. Ng rifled it across the lane to the right corner, where an open Justin Webster caught it and put it up and in for three points without hesitation. “I just […]

Hawaii soccer: For once, Wahine in favorable position on road

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii went on the road and beat UC Riverside 2-0 to improve to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the WAC championship season of 2007. After a scoreless first half, UH got goals from Kelci Sumida in the 55th minute (assisted by Kayla Watanabe) and from Eliza Ammendolia in the 88th (from Daelenn Tokunaga). UPDATE: Riverside made a stat fix to reflect that Elena Palacios had the assist for Sumida, not Watanabe. It was the team-high-tying […]

Hawaii football: Valuing possessions vs. Air Force not optional

By Brian McInnis on October 15, 2019

Make each one count. Each one being possessions. That’s the message — offensively, anyway — as Hawaii prepares for Air Force in a second straight cross-divisional Mountain West matchup at 5 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium. “Ground Force” has a way of making the seconds tick all the way down on teams with its triple-option offense. The Falcons dominated time of possession, 39:29 to Fresno State’s 20:31, a 43-24 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Give it away, or punt […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Zoar Nedd assertive at Green & White scrimmage

By Brian McInnis on October 12, 2019

The 10 who saw action in Hawaii’s Green & White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon had every opportunity to make a case for playing time in the upcoming 2019-20 season. Redshirt freshman Zoar Nedd did just that, scoring 10 points in 25 minutes of game action spanning three periods in front of a crowd of about 400 at the Stan Sheriff Center. “It was special. It was the first couple buckets I ever had (in front of a crowd) in this […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Boise State

By Brian McInnis on October 12, 2019

The Hawaii football team has taken on Boise State on “The Blue” six times entering today’s ESPN2-televised matchup at Albertsons Stadium. Of those, the Rainbow Warriors have played the Broncos within a touchdown only once — the Sept. 23, 2006 meeting between Colt Brennan’s ‘Bows and and the storied Broncos of Jared Zabransky and Ian Johnson. It’s no secret that the all-time series between UH and BSU has been heavily skewed to the Broncos — 12-3 overall. And there have […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Shooting for next-gen shooting

By Brian McInnis on October 11, 2019

During a recent practice, Hawaii basketball coach Eran Ganot brought his players together and let them know in no uncertain terms that their performance in a shooting drill was unacceptable. Twice. “Our shooting wasn’t there,” Ganot said afterward. “So a big part of our being good in any area, and in that area for sure, is being consistent. You might have a range there, but our range can’t be that wide. Our numbers, the extremes were too far apart. … […]
