Hawaii soccer: Nagamine wins Big West Coach of Year, Mata Goalkeeper of Year

By Brian McInnis on November 6, 2019

For the distinction of advancing to the Big West tournament for the first time, the Hawaii soccer team received its largest haul of Big West postseason awards to date on Wednesday. At the top of the list, Michele Nagamine was named BWC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career, becoming the first UH coach to receive a conference COY since Pinsoom Tenzing in 2007. UH (6-7-4, 4-1-3 BWC) was picked to finish seventh by the league’s […]

Hawaii football: Rolovich to make quarterback decision later this week

By Brian McInnis on November 5, 2019

Saturday’s difficult loss to old rival Fresno State gave Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich plenty to think about. At or near the top of that list? Who his starting quarterback will be for this weekend’s battle with San Jose State. Redshirt junior Cole McDonald has started every game this season, but was lifted late against the Bulldogs for redshirt freshman Chevan Cordeiro, who helped spark the Rainbow Warriors from two touchdowns down to tie the game at 38 before Fresno drove […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Is Big West a 3-bid league?

By Brian McInnis on November 4, 2019

An interesting three-team race for the Big West Conference women’s volleyball crown was on full display at the Stan Sheriff Center in the last few days. Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, at two losses in conference apiece, are all very much still in the running to claim the BWC regular-season championship and automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with either four or five games remaining. No. 21 UH (20-3, 10-2 Big West) is undoubtedly the best positioned of […]

Hawaii soccer is No. 4 seed, draws Fullerton in Big West tournament

By Brian McInnis on November 3, 2019

Despite earning a point in its regular-season finale at Long Beach State, the Hawaii soccer team was assigned the fourth seed among four teams in next week’s Big West tournament. The tournament will be held at Cal State Fullerton, which earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Cal State Northridge in its finale Sunday. After a series of tiebreakers, Northridge, UC Santa Barbara and UH — which all finished at 15 points in the standings in a tie for […]

VIDEO: Fourth-quarter timeline of Hawaii football’s 41-38 loss to Fresno State

By Brian McInnis on November 3, 2019

Fair warning: This one might be tough to re-live, Hawaii football fans. Nevertheless, Warrior World’s mission is to document both the successes and shortcomings of University of Hawaii sports, and Saturday night’s 41-38 loss to Fresno State at Aloha Stadium was, unfortunately for the Rainbow Warriors, one of the latter. It was a highly dramatic fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs in the process of pulling away for a road victory before Chevan Cordeiro appeared poised to rouse the Warriors to […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Fresno State

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

On a Friday night in Halawa in October of 2001, it was peak Hawaii-Fresno State. “Magic” it would be described by no fewer than two sportswriters. Of the 51 all-time meetings between the Rainbow Warriors and the Bulldogs going into tonight’s clash at Aloha Stadium, none may be better remembered on the Hawaii side than the Oct. 6, 2001 encounter (with apologies to the overtime clash in 1999 and the 2007 battle, among others). Rolovich. Lelie. Jackson. Those were just […]

Hawaii women’s volleyball: Okino, Wahine outlast Ruddins, UCSB

By Brian McInnis on November 2, 2019

For a few moments, it appeared that UC Santa Barbara hitter Lindsey Ruddins was going to single-handedly carry the Gauchos to a crucial road win at Hawaii. Fortunately for UH, and most unfortunately for UCSB, Friday night’s match at the Stan Sheriff Center lasted much longer than a few moments. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. UC SANTA BARBARA The Gauchos’ senior hitter had season highs in both kills (27) and swings (80) in hitting .275, but she wore down in […]

Hawaii soccer: Irvine loss clinches Big West tournament berth for Wahine

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2019

For the first time in its eight years as a member of the Big West Conference, the Hawaii soccer team is through to the league’s postseason tournament. After UH (6-7-3, 4-1-2 BWC) put itself on the cusp of qualifying with Thursday’s 3-2 win at UC Davis, the rest was taken care of for the Wahine when UC Irvine lost in overtime at Cal Poly, 3-2, on Friday. “We were all watching at our hotel. Oh jeez. My heart,” coach Michele […]
