Hawaii basketball: Rainbow Warriors make Beon Ja Riley official, Wahine sign 5

By Brian McInnis on November 13, 2019

The Hawaii men’s basketball team made its one and only (so far) signing official on the first day of National Letter of Intent signing day Wednesday, while the Hawaii women’s basketball team put together a second straight large haul in the fall. UH officially announced the signing of 6-foot-6 guard Beon Ja Riley, who’d previously announced his commitment to the Rainbow Warriors. Worth noting that it was just “Beon Riley,” with no “Ja” in today’s announcement. Eran Ganot, who’s been […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Drew Buggs’ hustle play turns tide against Pacific

By Brian McInnis on November 11, 2019

Eddie Stansberry, who poured in a career-high-tying 26 points and put his team ahead briefly with a late four-point play, immediately volunteered this about another moment of Hawaii’s 72-67 win over Pacific to cap the Outrigger Rainbow Classic on Monday night. “Game-winning play.” >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. PACIFIC He was referring to point guard Drew Buggs’ sprint and dive to retrieve a loose ball that Buggs and center Mate Colina collaborated to knock away from Tigers guard Justin Moore […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Eddie Stansberry’s hot half not enough against South Dakota

By Brian McInnis on November 10, 2019

Only four times last year did Eddie Stansberry convert more 2-point field goals than 3-point field goals in a game. Four out of 30 games played. So far in 2019-20, the Hawaii senior shooting guard is 1-for-2 in that respect. Stansberry showed off a more well-rounded game in busting out of a brief season-opening slump on Sunday night against South Dakota, scoring all of his 21 points in the second half. However, the Rainbow Warriors came up short, 81-75, when […]

In a late-season twist, redshirt freshman Chevan Cordeiro was called upon to start for Hawaii against San Jose State on Saturday night. The Saint Louis School product came through, throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns and running for two more in the Rainbow Warriors’ 42-40 victory to improve to 6-4 on the season and 3-3 in the Mountain West. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. Hawaii Football Throwbacks: San Jose State

By Brian McInnis on November 9, 2019

With attendance a hot-button topic lately for University of Hawaii football, let us journey back to a time when 18,000 people in the stands represented not a disappointment, but a rousing success. Back to Dec. 3, 1938, when the Rainbows defeated powerhouse San Jose State College for the first time. The Shrine game took place at the old Honolulu Stadium in front of “a wildly excited assemblage of 18,000 souls — the largest throng ever to witness a football in […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: For now, Chris Gerlufsen is program’s 22nd head coach (UPDATED after season-opening win over Florida A&M)

By Brian McInnis on November 8, 2019

UPDATED: Chris Gerlufsen was a winner in his debut as the 22nd head coach in Hawaii men’s basketball program history. Gerlufsen, the acting head coach in place of ailing Eran Ganot, guided the Rainbow Warriors on a win-is-a-win-is-a-win kind of night in the 2019-20 opener, 65-52 over Florida A&M. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. FLORIDA A&M “It was different not having Coach Ganot there. But you know, he installed a culture that doesn’t change whether he’s on the sideline or […]

Hawaii soccer season ends in Big West semifinals

By Brian McInnis on November 7, 2019

Hawaii made the Big West soccer tournament for the first time, but tonight showed the Rainbow Wahine have a long way to go to win a conference championship. Top-seeded Cal State Fullerton took it to the Wahine from the outset and advanced to Sunday’s Big West title game at UH’s expense with a 3-0 victory on their own Titan Field. Savannah Sloniger (ninth minute), Maddie Bennett (16th) and Haley Brown (51st) scored to bring the Wahine season to a close […]

Hawaii women’s basketball: Wahine conditioned to succeed

By Brian McInnis on November 6, 2019

Something underpinned the well-executed Xs and Os and effective late-game execution for the Hawaii women’s basketball team on Tuesday night. Conditioning. It was an important factor for a team that can’t lean into its bench much to start a season the way many can, because of some offseason and preseason injuries.
