Beach poll
Hawaii (2-2), preseason No. 5, was at No. 6 in today’s AVCA Coaches Top 20. UCLA (5-0), which won last weekend’s Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Classic at Queen’s Beach, was the unanimous top pick followed by USC (0-0).

Pepperdine (3-1), the Kahanamoku Classic runner-up, moved up a spot to No. 3. LSU (4-0) moved up three spots to No. 4 followed by Florida State (4-1).

Among other Big West teams, Cal Poly (3-3) dropped one place to No. 7 and Long Beach State (9-0) remained at No. 8. Hawaii travels next week to the East Meets West Classic at Manhattan Beach, Calif., where the SandBows will face No. 4 LSU, No. 5 Florida State and No. 9 Florida International (4-0) as well as unranked TCU (2-2).

Men’s poll
The Rainbow Warriors (10-0) remained at No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches DI-II Top 15.
Hawaii is behind defending national champion Long Beach State (13-0) and ahead of its next opponent UC Irvine (13-2). The Warriors open Big West play Friday against the Anteaters in Irvine, Calif.

Matautia, Rattray chosen
Former Hawaii outside hitter Austin Matautia was one of 12 players named to the U.S. team that will compete at July’s World University Games in Italy.
Matautia, a Moanalua High all-state player, is in his first season with UCLA after transferring from Hawaii. Brandon Rattray, who also transferred from Hawaii to UCLA, was one of two opposites selected.

Is Lea Monkhead having ncaa clearance issues? Sorry to see that Chloe Luyties wasn’t in the lineup for Cal. They both could have helped us.

#1 cannot be clearance issues if she played in the exhibition the previous week. If I’m not mistaken, I did read she was playing in flight #6 prior to UCLA coming to Hawaii.

I think you cannot play exhibition if you are not cleared.

My guess is UCLA is too loaded and there is no room for her. Lea might have been a freshmen All American at UH but some coaches are reluctant to break up teams that play well together.

She is just going to have to bide her time.

    new thread up for Tuesday
1-2. Monkhouse is cleared. If she had stayed, Hall said she likely would have been at No. 1 with Maglio. But she didn’t want to be in Hawaii any longer.
As for Luyties, don’t know how much she would have helped had she stayed.
Perhaps we’ll see her next week at Queen’s
