redemption in order vs fsu. lets go beach bows@!
USC eliminates Pepperdine 3-2.
How was Alabama chosen for the beach NCAA championship? I like it because it is neutral.
Neutral? Sorry, I don’t see it that way. The West Coast teams and Hawaii have to travel a long ways, but for schools like LSU, FSU and FIU, it’s practically in their back yard. Easy for their families and friends to be at the matches. Just how many families and friends from California and Hawaii will make the trek?
Great effort by UH, can still win it all, not to change the subject, but anybody heard if future sandbow’s Julia Scoles former UNC teammate Taylor Borup is headed here to play indoor. looked at her instagram and don’t know if she is hinting following Scoles here. She would really add some firepower and height to the OH position, to go along with Gaskin on the opposite, and she has 2 more years of eligibility. Just hoping, I guess.
At least they have another day
Top two pairs need to step it up.
H-man…as much as I’d love for HI to host this event, we don’t have any beach wide enough to accommodate…ie, seating for fans! This is a great setup! And most of HI players are not from HI, so family can make trip just about as easily as everyone else! The fans I’ve met while here love vball and have come from GA, NE and MN! Monkhouse’s mom is here and i think Hannah or Carly’s mom plus a booster or two…
My question is, I see no info that the winner of the Hawaii vs. USC/UCLA winner would have to beat FSU 2X to take the title (unlike how the Big West tournament was). Is this the case- the NC is a winner-take-all 1X final? If so, today’s loss is not so devastating and tomorrow’s task for whomever coming out of the elimination match not as daunting.
Man, hate to say it but it looks like Maglio’s injury is affecting her movement somewhat. She looks a little less fluid than she normally is. I was hoping they would win today so she could rest it a little more. Hope it holds up.
The final is a one and done (no double elimination).
Warrior women still have chance to win it all. They just don’t have chance to rest like FSU.
Thanks #10 for the info. In some respects, it may be advantageous for the losers bracket winner then- warmer, though of course fatigue being the opposing factor. Anyway, they are young and adrenaline should kick in. FSU could get jittery waiting around to see who they are playing. My prediction in light of this info is that UCLA avenges their opening match loss. They are looking once again like the #1 team in the nation.
Oh wait, in spite of UCLA winning all set 1’s and 1 flight, its looking tight now. My gut is saying to pull for the Trojans. I have a feeling if its UCLA, the Hawaii connection- Metzger will haunt UH as it always seems to do.
All matches against FSU winnable today! Wish we’d pulled it out! Flt 1 looked all around sluggish…told folks they often start slow…better in game 2. Hope everyone comes out with a vengeance tmrw to take down UCLA! Go ‘Bows!
Whoever wins between uh/ucla is your national champion I predict
Go wahine. Top flights need to stepp it up play with more energy!
UH needs to beat the only two teams in the nation against which they have two game losing steaks – in this season. Gotta give FSU all the credit in the world for getting to the finals. Championships truly are won.

from UH
The No. 3 University of Hawai’i beach volleyball team and Florida State engaged in another epic NCAA battle with the Seminoles outlasting the Rainbow Wahine, 3-2, in the semifinals of the 2018 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship.
With the win, the No. 4 seed Seminoles (33-6) punched a ticket into Sunday’s national title game while also snapping UH’s nation-leading 32 match win streak. Ironically, UH’s last loss came on March 10 against the same Florida State squad in the East Meets West Challenge in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Despite the loss, the SandBows (37-4) are still alive in their national title hunt. UH will face top-seed UCLA Sunday at 5:30 p.m. HT with the winner facing Florida State in NCAA finals at 8:00 am HT.
The teams split the top four courts – FSU winning courts 1 and 2 and UH 2 and 4 – to set up the deciding match on court 5. It was a near repeat scenario of last year’s matchup with the deciding point coming down to Court 5 in a three-set barn-burner. UH won that match last year, but this time, the Seminoles returned the favor. Madison Fitzpatrick and Francesca Goncalves powered past Paige Dreeuws and Hannah Zalopany 24-22, 21-23, 15-12 to send FSU into the title match with its 21st straight victory.
UH will now face UCLA (38-4) for the fourth time this season. The SandBows went 1-2 against the Bruins while playing them three times in the first five matches of the year. The UH win came via a 5-0 sweep in Honolulu on the opening day of the season. The Bruins won two matches on Saturday to stave off elimination and ousted two-time defending NCAA champs USC, 3-1.
Long Beach State takes Set 1 25-19
https://www.ncaa.com/game/volleyball-men/d1/2018/05/05/long-beach-st-ucla
Bruins tie it up with 25-23 win in Set 2.
Bruins take Set 3 25-20
Beach ties it with 26-24 win in Set 4. on to the fifth.
Beach wins title 15-12 in Set 5.
The UCLA Long Beach game was great with a big comeback at the end for LB to take it after looking like it had LB on the roads. UCLA killed itself—absolutely killed itself by service errors all the way into the 5th game. A never say die game.
I like all the criticism for our top two flights. These teams have some of the best records for the season compared to the other flights (with exception of flight 4 that came in last half of the season).
They have different game plans (and energy) then some of the smaller, “dynamic” teams. They are also playing the best pairs in the country and no small task. Can they play better? Probably, but give them a break! They are all doing their best. They carried this team to a good portion of the season to get this team where it is.
I have confirmed through sources there that Maglio does have a pretty daunting injury and is playing through it. She may not be moving quite as effortlessly as she normally does, but they are still doing telatively well, with this being their
first loss today.
Martin and Monkhouse are having a bit of a tougher tournament than the one’s but they were playing at the “three’s” against several of these teams. They are playing some very tough teams that have played at the one’s. FSU, UCLA, Pepp are all new match ups. i hope when they meet up with FSU again, they can make the necessary adjustments.
It was a great game for the Men’s NCAA championship with LBS coming through at the end. Or did UCLA choke a little? Anyway, Hawaii beat them both and no one else can say that. Defalco hit over .400, and is the most dominant player I have seen in a long time. I still think the Wahine have a good chance to prevail tomorrow especially if Emily is ok. Martin and Monkhouse are the ones that I am scratching my head about. All will be revealed tomorrow.
Not too much criticism , just that they can play better and hopefully they will tomorrow.
Congrats to Long beach hope the wahine make this a big west sweep.
UCLA, FSU, and Hawaii are all deserving at this point by their overall play to be National Champions. Yes, I would have liked to play USC than UCLA in the elimination game but it will still come down to whoever plays at a high level of energy, makes the most of every opportunity, and makes the least amount of errors. This is a tough call but I still look forward to watching with anxieties.
Regardless of what happens tomorrow, this Sand Bows has set the standard for our future seasons. Above and Beyond!! They are exemplifying every aspects of our true Hawaiian Style culture and what we expect from every player that wears that uniform. True Grit!! Thank you Coach Jeff and Staff for doing a remarkable job!
According to the NCAA site’s bracketing wahine play UCLA at 5:30 am Sunday morning HST. Spectrum channel guide also says 5:30 am. This blog says 5:30 pm. Which is it?? Mahalo.
28. Of course 5:30 AM. With a time zone difference, they wouldn’t be playing at 11:30 PM Alabama time. As third seed the women will probably finish in third place. Too bad they couldn’t beat FSU. If only one pair did a little better…
As for the men’s NCAA championship match, I’m glad that Long Beach beat UCLA for two reasons, one that one of the three NCAA Committee members that snubbed Hawaii was from UCLA and second that Long Beach will be a little less hungry to win the NCAA tournament if they have a perfect season record next year. Hawaii can lose both matches to Long Beach on the road as long as the Warriors win the Big West tournament against Long Beach at home. Hawaii will simply need to beat CSUN and UCSB twice at home next year and UCSD on the road and perhaps split with Irvine to get a good enough seed in the Big West Conference next year. Even better, beat Irvine twice to vent their fury that Irvine made it to the NCAA instead of Hawaii this year. That would virtually assure a second seed again.
Such faith. Such foresight. Such drivel.
Ever watch the Brazilians play Beach volleyball? It’s not always about “high energy”. The teams have their own game plans to suit their style and individual skill set. If it was all about energy Kan and Weaver would win all their matches, but the one and two flights routinely beat them in practice. Dynamic teams are fun to watch especially when they are doing well (but the record of some of the dynamic teams e.g. Our #3 pair Kan and Weaver (30/10) Sometimes “energy efficiency” is the name of the game in Beach volleyball.
In any case, the hope is all the flights play to their full potential, stick to their game plan and play their game to the best of their abilities.
Our number one and two pairs are 35/ (Monkhouse 34/5), have the best records on the team. Hopefully, they can knock off some of the best pairs in the Nation tomorrow and bring home a National Championship.
I’m. Just mad.
COME ON, WAHINE AND COACHES!!!! You’ve been doing great all seaon long!!! No time to revert to didactic; time to know the taste of battle, like our Hawaiin warriors of old knew!!!!!! BRING IT HOME!!!! No make nice already!!!!!
Kyle Ensing, Nick Amado, Defalco, Tuaniga, all contributed to the end. But the last kill at 14-12 Long Beach State was the most memorable. Side out point. Dig, then the pass to Josh Tuaniga, set to Nick Amado, and the kill. Point Long Beach State 15-12, 5th set victory over UCLA. Nick Amado down all night. Ended up with 4 kills and two digs, but the most important points of all at 12-11, in their favor. Two blocks by Nick Amado, Kyle Ensing, over Christian Hausenuer(UCLA) put the Long Beach State up 14-12 in the 5th set to give the 49ers match point. Side out point. Dig, then the pass to Josh Tuaniga, the set to Nick Amado, then the final kill to put this match out of commission and winning it for Long Beach State. It was Nick Amado’s two blocks over Christian Hausenuer (UCLA), Kyle Ensing’s kill, and Nick’s final kill that put them over the top, to beat out UCLA at 12-9 lead in the 5th game (set). What a match it was. 1991, 2018 champions. 2 for 6 in the finals of the NCAA men’s national title tournament since 1970. Most thrilling victory for Long Beach State.

new thread up for Sunday
apologize if it said 5:30 pm. it’s AM
typo was in the UH release. I didn’t notice.
as for the how Alabama was selected. They have been hosting since 2012. put in a bid, it was accepted by the AVCA. they put in a bid and it was accepted by the NCAA.
As neutral site as it is, agree with the comments that it’s more taxing on Hawaii to travel there. and to the other West Coast teams as well. Florida schools not so much.
