Warrior Beat: Pacheco is the new “Voice”
Announcer/host Josh Pacheco will be the play-by-play announcer for ESPN 1420’s broadcasts of UH baseball game this season.
“I would say Josh is a consummate pro,” said Chris Hart, the station’s sales director and co-host of the “Sports Animals” talk show. “He prepares feverishly for all his play-by-play.”
Pacheco succeeds UH Circle of Honor inductee Jim Leahey, who announced his retirement from broadcasting last year. Don Robbs, who was the baseball “voice” for 40 years, and Leahey have been the program’s only regular play-by-play announcers.
Scott Galetti will continue to call UH’s road games.
Pacheco, who was born and reared on the Big Island, is a UH Hilo alumnus. He announced UH Hilo and BIIF sporting events for several years, as well as hosted a weekday talk show.
In addition to producing duties at ESPN 1420, he also hosts the “Josh Pacheco Show” each weekday.
Congrats to Josh
Go Hilo ! as in Go Bows.
#43 from previous post — will assume Boone Abbott has committed to UH
if he signs, I think he will be a good recruit — red-shirt 2019 and start UH career in 2020 — maybe he can be like Chevan in 2018 — play in up to 4 games to keep red shirt status.
that makes 3 incoming true freshman QBs? like how Rolo and staff is building for the future.
now, we need 2 or 3 6′ 5″ 320# DL to plug the middle!!!
He has the best sportcaster voice on TV or on radio. I DID laugh once when I read a Pee-Wee Herman voice comparison once.
But all kidding aside, in his regular show and play-by-play, Pacheco sticks to the game at hand, very pertinent comments and analysis on the game.
Congratulations, Josh Pacheco. A long way from Big Island. Of ALL the Hawaii sports broadcasters (again, on TV or radio), he has the most chance to go national.
Now that Jim Leahey is gone, I wonder how he’ll do when they get worse or better. Something like Bobby Curran in football, always optimistic. Bobby missed the Hawai’i Bowl though, which was a surprise.
How many homeruns did Jason Espiritu hit? He was 6-6.

A prolific quarterback from Utah told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he is joining the University of Hawaii football team.
“I just want to get out there and play ball,” said Boone Abbott, a senior at American Fork High. “That’s the plan.”
Abbott, who is 6 feet 2 and 178 pounds, said he will put his commitment in writing on Feb. 6, the first day of the NCAA’s spring-semester signing period for football prospects.
In 14 games this past season, Abbott threw for 4,438 yards and 47 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

Did you just see that basket by Zigmars Raimo to make it 9-4?
Upside.
Avea is athletic. He has the best vertical. He made a shot over his defender. You really don’t see that very often by Hawaii.
Ron Artest is in the house.
Flagrant 1 on his son.
