Warriors break camp

By Stephen Tsai on August 15, 2017

The Warriors quietly broke training camp on Monday as they focus on the Aug. 26 opener against UMass. Because UH freshmen may begin moving into the dorms today, the Warriors postponed this morning’s practice until this afternoon. The Warriors are expected to assign scout teams for tomorrow’s practice. “We’re getting ready for UMass,” coach Nick Rolovich said.

The story of a helmet

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2017

In a pleasant surprise, Geri Ichimura learned she sponsored lineman Eperone Moananu’s new helmet. Na Koa, the football team’s booster club, had solicited donations to purchase new helmets for the Warriors. Ichimura submitted a donation. Her name was picked randomly, and then written on the inside of Moananu’s helmet. The helmets were unveiled during a Na Koa ceremony for donors yesterday. A few years ago, Ichimura, a retired educator, was part of an accreditation team reviewing high schools in American […]

2016 class is making an impact

By Stephen Tsai on August 13, 2017

One of the good things about yesterday’s dress rehearsal/scrimmage was it showed the impact of the 2016 recruiting class, Nick Rolovich’s first as head coach. It is remarkable how quickly Rolovich was able to assemble a staff (he was hired in late November 2015) and then the staff assembling a recruiting class. Seven members of the class were on No. 1 units yesterday: > Quarterback Dru Brown > Offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry (who transferred from UCLA) > Weak-side linebacker Jeremiah […]

Gallup expected to change positions

By Stephen Tsai on August 12, 2017

Quarterback Kyle Gallup is facing a recovery period of between six and eight weeks after undergoing successful surgery to repair an injured meniscus in his right knee this past Wednesday. Head coach Nick Rolovich acknowledged that Gallup probably will be moved to tight end/H-back when he rejoins the team. The switch would be prompted because 1) the Warriors are deep with quarterbacks, and 2) Gallup is a physical player whose skills are suited as a blocker. As of now, the […]

Padello ready to serve

By Stephen Tsai on August 11, 2017

Defensive end KK Padello, a specialist with the Hawaii Army National Guard, is agreeable to putting his football career on hold if he is deployed to the Middle East next year. A Star-Advertiser story reported the Hawaii National Guard should be prepared for possible deployment early next year. “I joined to serve and protect,” Padello said. “That’s what I’m about. I care for people, and I care for people who can’t care for themselves. When my nation calls, I’ve got […]

Warriors enter pool play

By Stephen Tsai on August 10, 2017

After a brief practice this morning, which ended with linebacker Solomon Matautia’s interception during the 2-minute drill, coach Nick Rolovich gathered the players and ordered them to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center for a pool day. “They’ve been working hard,” Rolovich said. “Get a little off their legs, get them doing something, and have a little fun together. That’s important. We’re almost two weeks away (from the Aug. 26 opener). It’s time to take care of the bodies a little […]

Spiking the juice

By Stephen Tsai on August 9, 2017

There was extra juice during this morning’s practice, the 11th of training camp. As a motivational tool during 7-on-7 drills, if a DB made a pick or breakup, he would retrieve the football and spike it. There were a lot of spikes today, as the secondary had one of their better sessions. Two things of note: 1) The move helped motivate the offense, leading to brisk and spirited play by both sides, and 2) it was not done in team […]

Fishing tale

By Stephen Tsai on August 8, 2017

This summer, safety Daniel Lewis and linebacker Max Broman were part of a crew for a boat that catered to celebrities. Lewis said there was a memorable time with comedian/actor Dane Cook: “We threw some lines out while we were sailing to Lanai. One of the lines was straight. We were like, ‘Oh we caught something.’ I asked (Cook), ‘do you want to reel it in?’ ‘Can I?’ I said, ‘sure, you paid for all this.’ He started reeling it […]
