Warriors are even in an uneven season

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2017

A third of the season has been completed, and this is what we’ve learned: > Diocoemy Saint Juste and Ryan Tuiasoa are a powerful 1-2 punch. The Warriors also found ways to get Saint Juste the ball on screens and slip passes. It might be intriguing to see Tuiasoa the target of screens, too. > It’s one thing to identify the need to avoid relinquishing chunk plays; it’s another to stop them. The Warriors practice against it, emphasize it, and […]

Game day: Wyoming

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2017

LARAMIE — The beauty — and controversy — of baseball is no two stadiums are alike. And Laramie is what’s intriguing about college football. Like BYU and volleyball, football in Wyoming is different than other places because of the elements. High altitude? Yes, it really does matter, at least according to my own experience (two nose bleeds in two days). And because it’s sitting on top of the Rocky Mountains, when it’s windy, it’s really windy, and when it rains, […]

Practice, rain, food

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2017

Some days you’re having so much fun … you forget to write a blog post. The Warriors had a 2-hour workout at East High in Cheyenne, which is about 45 minutes away from Laramie (if you exceed the 70-mph limit). And then the Warriors feasted on Chick-Fil-A: And then a sunny day turned into this: So I sped back to Laramie, dropped off Reardon at the hotel, and then went to UW to get UW-made sausages: And then it was […]

Warriors visit injured teammate

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2017

After arriving in Denver this morning, the Warriors visited defensive lineman Kalepo Naotala at the Craig Hospital in Englewood. Naotala is being treated for a spinal injury he suffered during an accident off Waikiki on July 1. He was transferred to Craig, which specializes in neuro rehabilitation. UH media relations director Derek Inouchi provides these photos:

Getaway day

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2017

During today’s practice: > The offense interrupted a drill to perform a quick dance routine to a Michael Jackson song. > Head coach Nick Rolovich was intercepted on a pass across the middle of the first-team defense. “I haven’t thrown a pick in 10 years, probably,” Rolovich said. > “Superstition” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” blared from the speakers, proving that, yes, Stevie Wonder can perform at UH. But in crunch time — the 2-minute drill — Dru Brown […]

Blast from the past

With a half hour remaining in today’s practice, former head coach Bob Wagner was summoned to address the Warriors.

Back in action

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2017

Following the bye weekend, the Warriors were back on the practice field today, competing against the scout units ahead of Saturday’s road game against Wyoming. Two significant things happened: 1) there were several ailing players who missed treatments, and 2) as punishment, the Warriors had to run a series of 110-yard sprints after practice. The extra-curricular workout served as punishment, as it turned out, for the players who missed the treatments. They had to stand in the middle of the […]

Going back to Paniolo Country

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2017

Sure, it might not be the original Paniolo Trophy. But so what? Nobody’s complaining about Arnel Pineda singing Journey songs. “I think it’s a beautiful trophy,” head coach Nick Rolovich said of the prize for the winner of the UH-Wyoming game. “I’m excited to get an opportunity to defend the ownership of it.” The trophy rests in the display case at the foyer of the UH locker room. “Where it should be,” Rolovich said. But this Wednesday it will be […]
