Sophomore slumps

By Stephen Tsai on November 13, 2017

Sophomore slumps are real. In sports (Robert Griffin III), on the big screen (“Rocky II”) and music (when’s that second Iggy Azalea album being released?). And so it is with the UH football program: Fred vonAppen > 1996: 2-10 > Offseason: Offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin is reassigned and receivers coach Ken Margerum departs. > 1997: Warriors open with victories over Minnesota and Cal State Northridge, then lose nine of the final 10. June Jones > 1999: 9-4 > Offseason: Defensive […]

No time for regrets

By Stephen Tsai on November 12, 2017

No time to waste for the Warriors, who are recovering from last night’s loss to Fresno State, continuing to recruit and looking ahead to this coming Saturday’s road game against Utah State. The first priority is improved health. Right tackle Matt Norman, who has played well the past three games, exited in the second quarter. Chris Posa moved from left guard to right tackle. J.R. Hensley played left guard. While wideout Isaiah Bernard returned to action, Marcus Armstrong-Brown was unavailable […]

Game Day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on November 11, 2017

The best of foes — Hawaii and Fresno State — meet for the 50th time. Yes, they have had quite a history, particularly in the June Jones-Pat Hill rivalries. There was even that bizarre time when Jones invited Hill to a UH spring practice. Ah, memories … But the past is the past, and here’s the current situation: > The Bulldogs are off to a nice start at 4-1 in the Mountain West. They already are bowl eligible. Although Fresno […]

Coming and going

By Stephen Tsai on November 10, 2017

The Warriors are set to welcome recruits this weekend. The Warriors expect to sign at least 10 players for the three-day commitment period beginning Dec. 20, a group that includes grayshirts, blueshirts and recruits. Offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry is scheduled to undergo surgery today for a patella injury. Ulu-Perry is done for this season.

Remembering Gordon Sakamoto

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2017

You might not have known Gordon Sakamoto personally, but you knew what he did. As wire-service chief in the Bay Area and then Honolulu, he was responsible for spreading the news worldwide in a pre-internet era. While Gordon ran the wire bureaus during the day and often into the late night — it was always deadline somewhere in the world — he also covered UH sporting events, notably basketball and football. He kept meticulous notes in Hallmark-perfect block print. Such […]

Ailments end two Warrior careers

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2017

Two players who entered as walk-ons will not get to finish their careers because of physical ailments. Linebacker Max Broman, who was put on scholarship this past summer, and Terrence Sayles, who worked his way to starting corner and off-set kickoff returner, have completed their UH careers, head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed. The timing is unfortunate. Broman, who was raised in Utah, will miss a chance to play when the Warriors travel to Utah State next week. For Sayles, who served […]

On the mend

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2017

The Warriors expect to be in improved health for Saturday’s game against Fresno State. Key players who did not make the trip to Las Vegas are expected to return to action this week. But offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry will miss the rest of the season because of a patella injury suffered against UNLV. It has been a challenging year for Ulu-Perry, who did not participate in spring practice because of health issues. He was limited to seven games, including four […]

Savings plan

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2017

With all the injuries and ailments this season, the Warriors have done a good job resisting the urge to activate players who are set to redshirt. The depth-challenged offensive line probably could use Micah Vanterpool and Emil Graves. But to protect their futures, they remain on redshirt status. The same is true for defensive tackle Anthony Mermea, rover Justice Augafa and tight end Karson Greeley. Paul Scott, who had been injured most of the season, also has maintained his redshirt […]
