Brenden Daley (1991-2017)

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2017

Former UH linebacker Brenden Daley is being remembered as a tough football player with a kind and witty personality. Daley reportedly died of a brain aneurysm on Wednesday in California. He was 26. “I remember when we recruited him,” said UH head coach Nick Rolovich, who was the offensive coordinator when Daley transferred from Ventura College to UH in 2011. “He was a guy who really fell in love with Hawaii. He really fell in love with being a Warrior. […]

By Stephen Tsai on November 22, 2017

Penitito “Kiko” Faalologo gave it the ol’ college try, but although his mind was willing, his body will not allow him to finish out his senior season. Faalologo had missed the past five games because of a leg issues that will require surgery. He has been noticeably absent during UH’s final week of practice. Faalologo, who was raised in Samoa, has come a long way since accepting a UH scholarship while on a tour in Texas. He has been used […]

It’s BYU week

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2017

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s been a rough year for the Warriors. But there could be a sweet parting if the Warriors can prevail against BYU this coming Saturday. Yes, kids, ask your parents and grandparents what the UH-BYU rivalry meant. The rivalry is spread throughout the athletic program. Here are memorable images: BYU’s Peter Kendrick winning both games of a doubleheader … UH’s Joe Frazier holding and holding the ball in an era before the shot clock … UH players […]

Game Day: Utah State

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2017

I’ve been a Jets’ fan for more than half a century, but as a kid, I used to also like to watch the Washington Redskins. The reason, from a childlike brain that has not developed further, is they always played in Baby Bear conditions: Not too cold, not too balmy. Some mainland folks enjoy the changing of the seasons; I liked it when it was so chilly that players were only comfortable when they were playing. In other words, football […]

Snow (flurry) day

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY — The Warriors were greeted with snow flurries at the start of this morning’s practice at East High. And then the flurries turned into cold rain. The Warriors splashed their way through an hour-long practice before heading back to the hotel for a shower and quick meal. At the hotel, wideout Kalakaua Timoteo III said it was the first time he had seen a fireplace. The Warriors then made the long drive to Logan, where they will […]

Cool reception for Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY — The sky was overcast, the weather was yuck, and the wind was, well, windy. But the Warriors had fun in a 90-minute workout that was part instructional, part get-some-fresh-air time. It was a hurry-up day for the Warriors, who arrived at the hotel at 7:30 a.m., had breakfast, slept for a few hours, and then practiced at noon. Rain is forecast for Friday and the temperature for Saturday’s kickoff is projected to be 41 degrees. “It’s […]

A principal with principles

By Stephen Tsai on November 15, 2017

As Dave Reardon reports, Al Minn has passed away. Thousands knew Minn as a firm but knowledgable swimming coach. Many others knew him as the leader of the Honolulu Quarterback Club, a gathering place for sports figures and the public. He was a man who lived for his family and his faith. For years, his wife ran a not-for-profit thrift shop at Kailua Methodist Church that provided clothing and other support for those in need. He was my principal at […]
