McNamara helped build baseball program

By Stephen Tsai on December 9, 2017

College recruiting is difficult, and college baseball recruiting is bonkers. A school has to: > Out-recruit other schools; > Hope that a commitment does not receive a too-good-to-pass-up offer from the major leagues; > Find a player who is willing to pay up to 75 percent of his own tuition/expenses to play. (A Division I school must spread the equivalent of 11.7 scholarships over 27 players, with 25 percent of a scholarship as the minimum per player.) > A player […]

The next wave

Bryan Addison Jr. of Junipero Serra High is a 4-star football player who is regarded as one of the top safety recruits in the country. It should come as no surprise that his father was a hard-hitting safety for the 1992 Rainbow Warriors that went 11-2, capped by the victory over Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. That season, the elder Addison was instrumental in thwarting Air Force’s flex-bone offense in UH’s 6-3 road victory. “He was a high school quarterback/athlete,” […]

In pursuit of new Warriors

C’mon, you didn’t think Rolo could just sit behind a desk? During this contact period that runs through Dec. 16, Rolo has been out recruiting, spending this past week on the mainland. Unlike the spring, where only the assistant coaches can do in-person recruiting, head coaches are permitted to do home visits. Rolo and all his full-time assistants have been out on the recruiting trail, with half here and the rest off island. UH expects a significant number of commitments […]

Washington State’s Hercules Mata‘afa is college football’s most electrifying defensive player, with half of his 43 tackles made on the opponent’s side of the field. Of his 21.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 have been sacks. But is Mata‘afa the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year? There is a strong case that Hawaii middle linebacker Jahlani Tavai had a greater impact in his games. What’s more, there were two games Mata‘afa did not make a tackle and a third in […]

Dual role for JJ

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2017

June Jones yesterday made official what he confirmed last week when he signed a three-year contract to remain as head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Jones told us he also will keep his position as Saint Louis School’s director of athletic programs and development. It’s a long title that essentially means fund-raiser. And while Jones’ CFL salary was not disclosed, it has been confirmed his Saint Louis salary is zero. Nada. Zippo. * * * […]

Gallup poll

I remember I really wanted to vote for Hubert Humphrey for president because 1) the alliteration of his name, and 2) he was running against George Wallace and then Richard Nixon.(Even then, Alabama had questionable political candidates.) The problem was I was 8 in 1968. Thus, I understand the privilege and responsibility of being a voter. But other than running the high school football poll for a few years with The Advertiser a long, long time ago, I don’t get […]

Hawaii Bowl: Fresno vs. UH (Houston)

By Stephen Tsai on December 3, 2017

Yep, UH qualified for the Hawaii Bowl. OK, OK. It’s the University of Houston, but still … Anyway, how does everyone feel about a Fresno State-Houston matchup in the Hawaii Bowl? The last time Houston played at Aloha Stadium was in the 2003 Hawaii Bowl. The Warriors won that game, 54-48, there was a pretty cool fight at the end, and Art Briles was the Cougars’ head coach. Yeah, that was a long time ago. * * * * * […]

Visitors’ weekend

By Stephen Tsai on December 2, 2017

Another Saturday, another overcast day. For the Warriors, there’s a bright spot to this weekend. There are five recruits on official visits. The Warriors are hopeful of signing more than half the 2018 recruiting class on Dec. 20, the first day of the new three-day early signing period. * * * * * A guy asks a girl to the prom. She says, “sounds good,” but no promises … yet. The guy asks a second time. She says, “still sounds […]
