Aloha state of mind

By Stephen Tsai on December 26, 2017

As legend has it, Craig Stutzmann was a perfect 16 for 16 over three years as recruiting host to prospects who ended up signing with UH. Rocky Savaiigaea also was a host with the most in building classes a decade ago. It appears that two of the best hosts this past recruiting period were offensive lineman Micah Vanterpool and running back Miles Reed. That’s significant because both are true freshmen who redshirted this past season and important players in the […]

Warriors address needs in recruiting

By Stephen Tsai on December 25, 2017

Everybody has good Christmas presents. Every football team has a good recruiting class. But while the 2018 recruiting class can’t be fully judged for a while, the Warriors filled areas of need, such as: > Defensive line: They signed six defensive linemen, including five who could fill the vacancies at end. Jonah La‘ulu, who is listed as an “athlete,” can play multiple position, including edge rusher. > Offensive line: The Warriors graduated their left side (tackle Dejon Allen and John […]

Hawaii Bowl … Derek Thomas signs

By Stephen Tsai on December 24, 2017

It’s a busy time, but the Hawaii Bowl is the last college football game to be played in the Aloha State this year. And Fresno State and Houston have pretty interesting players. Plus, this is your chance to tell your future grandkids: “Yep, Papa remembers watching Ed Oliver play in Hawaii …” * * * * * There was a delay, but defensive end Derek Thomas of Cerritos College did transmit a copy of his letter of intent yesterday evening. […]

By Stephen Tsai on December 22, 2017

The three-day signing period for high-school prospects ends today, but the Warriors are not pau recruiting this year. The NCAA allows mid-year transfers from junior colleges to sign through Jan. 15. The Warriors are looking to add to the 15-members 2018 recruiting class.

A day with the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on December 21, 2017

Yesterday, this blog host received a once-in-37-year-career opportunity: an invitation to spend signing day with the Warriors. After 13 hours, this is what I learned: > Few surprises: The UH coaches know about that under-sized but gritty offensive lineman. They know about that running back who is transferring. They know about your cousin’s son’s best friend. If that prospect is not on the UH recruiting board, he’s probably not a fit or he might not meet all the requirements or […]

JJ and Glanville to reunite in CFL

By Stephen Tsai on December 19, 2017

It appears that a June Jones-Jerry Glanville reunion is in the works. Glanville is poised to join the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a Canadian Football League team that recently signed Jones to a three-year extension as head coach. Jones took over an 0-8 Hamilton team that went 6-4 under his direction. When the deal is finalized, Glanville would fill the void filled after Jeff Reinebold was dismissed as defensive coordinator in mid-season. Jones was an assistant under Glanville with the Houston Oilers […]

Suiaunoa, Hynson set to leave UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 18, 2017

Defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa and receivers coach Kefense Hynson are expected to leave the Warriors and join Oregon State’s coaching staff, the Star-Advertiser has learned. An official announcement could come as early as today. Suiaunoa coached the UH defensive linemen in 2016, then was promoted to defensive coordinator the past February after Kevin Lempa resigned to join Michigan’s staff. Hynson is an original member of Nick Rolovich’s initial coaching staff. The Warriors will need to hire four coaches. Chris Naeole […]
