Passing it forward

By Stephen Tsai on February 10, 2018

Twice a week, former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz helps young quarterbacks — for free — work on footwork and technique. Moniz came up with the program with a two-fold purpose. It gives Moniz, who is not attending school this semester, a way to keep fit. It also allows Moniz to help younger quarterbacks. This past week, Ikaika Woolsey, who plays for a team in Japan, helped with the tutoring. Woolsey will be in town for another month. Moniz was the […]

Former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz has signed a free-agent contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, according to head coach June Jones. Earlier, the Tiger-Cats re-signed Jeremiah Masoli. Jones said he also traded for Vernon Adams, a former Oregon quarterback who succeeded Marcus Mariota. Adams started his collegiate career at Eastern Washington before transferring. The Tiger-Cats also own the rights to Johnny Manziel. Jones said he is hopeful of signing Manziel, and keeping four quarterbacks on the […]

Decisions, decisions

By Stephen Tsai on February 8, 2018

It was signing day, and in a surprising coast-to-coast twist, one of Hawaii’s top defensive linemen decided to change his commitment. He thought about it, prayed on it, consulted with family and friends, and then made the decision. And that’s how Kamehameha’s Jonah Kahahawai-Welch, who had earlier committed to Navy, became a Warrior. Things happen. People have different dreams. (Mine mostly involve taking an exam for a class I didn’t attend all semester. Or falling. I do a lot of […]

The Warriors signed 10 players today, completing their 2018 recruiting class. This recruiting period, the Warriors addressed the offensive line, getting five signed commitments. In the two recruiting periods, the Warriors still signed five Hawaii high school seniors, including All-State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, and receivers Jonah Panoke and Scott McLeod. Today’s signees: > Alex Dalpe, OL, 6-4, […]

By Stephen Tsai on February 5, 2018

Two former UH assistant coaches — Ken Flajole and Trent Miles — will earn Super Bowl rings. Flajole is the Philadelphia Eagles’ linebackers coach. Miles is an offensive assistant who works with the quarterbacks. Both were members of Bob Wagner’s final UH staff in 1995 — Flajole as the DB coach, Miles as receivers coach. Flajole has coached in the NFL for 20 seasons, with the Packers, Seahawks, Rams, Saints, Panthers and Browns. Miles has been head coach at Indiana […]

UH football: Trading places

By Stephen Tsai on February 4, 2018

Dru Brown’s commitment to Oklahoma State should not be surprising. A graduate transfer is highly valued in college football. Even players with limited playing experience benefit from training in an FBS program. And graduate transfers are not required to redshirt. Similar to Bryant Moniz, Brown was largely under-appreciated during his two UH seasons. He was accurate (61.7 percent, fourth among Mountain West starting quarterbacks) and adjusted behind a patchwork offensive line that lost its position coach at midseason. Tennessee also […]
