Baseball ‘Bows seeking more arms

By Stephen Tsai on March 5, 2018

The baseball ‘Bows have a 1.74 earned-run average, their four starters allowed one earned run in 30 1/3 innings this past series, and they signed five pitchers to the 2019 recruiting class. It should be no surprise head coach Mike Trapasso, who doubles as the pitching coach, is in search of more hurlers. Trapasso departs today on a recruiting trip ahead of the ‘Bows’ three-game road series against LSU this weekend. The rest of the team departs tomorrow. During this […]

“For the love of the game”

By Stephen Tsai on March 4, 2018

Nobody needs to paint a picture for quarterback Hunter Hughes — as a graphic artist, he can do that himself — to know that he is facing long, long, improbable odds as he prepares for UH’s pro day later this month. The odds “have always been against me,” Hughes said. “It was a miracle I was on a Division I roster. I’m going to go out and give it my best shot.” The Warriors cut Hughes twice before he eventually […]

Former Warriors prepare for pro day

By Stephen Tsai on March 3, 2018

Former Warriors Dejon Allen and Trayvon Henderson are roommates in San Diego as they train for UH’s March 20 pro day on the Azusa Pacific and Citrus College campuses. Allen and Henderson are enrolled in the EXOS program, which offers services from nutrition to football-related training at the 15,860-square-foot facility. Allen met with several NFL scouts during the practices leading to East-West Shrine Game. He has fully recovered from a hand issue that kept him from playing in the game. […]

Moala transfers to Utah

By Stephen Tsai on March 2, 2018

Defensive tackle Viane Moala has transferred to Utah, the school announced today. Moala, who is 6 feet 7 and 290 pounds, requested — and received — his release from UH last month. He also withdrew from classes this spring semester. As part of the conditions of his release, according to people familiar with the situation, Moala was not allowed to sign with a team on UH’s schedule. That clause prevented Moala from transferring to another Mountain West school. The Mountain […]

Warriors announce 2018 schedule

By Stephen Tsai on March 1, 2018

The Warriors will open and close their 2018 regular season on the road, school officials announced today. The Warriors will open against Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., on Aug. 25. That “week zero” game is part of an NCAA exemption that allows UH and its 2018 opponents to play a week ahead of the usual start to the college-football season. By using the exemption, the Warriors will have a bye this season – on Nov. 10 — instead of […]

End game

By Stephen Tsai on February 28, 2018

The Warriors have decided to play their spring game on Saturday, April 28. The event is technically the 15th — and final — practice of spring training. The event will be held in the afternoon at the Ching Athletic Complex and will end before the first pitch of the UH baseball team’s game against Cal State Northridge at Les Murakami Stadium. The Warriors still are figuring if there is a way to hold a concert for the students without affecting […]

Dearly departed

By Stephen Tsai on February 27, 2018

Defensive lineman Anthony Mermea’s decision to leave the Warriors is neither surprising (he hinted at the move the past two months) nor unique, especially for a player who redshirted during his first college semester. The first time away from home for an extended period is when some freshmen reflect on whether the school or the program is the right fit. Running back/slotback Andrew Pearman, receiver Kwamane Bowens, defensive back Le’Marcus Gibson, cornerback Ray Bass and linebacker Drake Miller were among […]

Future Warrior gets a head start

By Stephen Tsai on February 26, 2018

Farrington High defensive lineman Foi Sila, who will join the Warriors as a walk-on this summer, is on an early track academically. Because Sila already has accumulated enough credits for his high school diploma, he is taking classes at Windward Community College this semester. He will participate in Farrington’s commencement ceremony on May 26. “I decided I should start early with my credits,” said Sila, whose long-term goal is to work in law enforcement. Sila recently participated in HPD’s ride-along […]
