Recruiting compass points to SE

By Stephen Tsai on May 10, 2018

It made sense for the new defensive coordinator with Mississippi ties to have an interest in recruiting prospects from the Magnolia State. It was 1999, and freshly hired Greg McMackin went to the Mississippi junior colleges in search of players for UH’s recruiting class. McMackin received commitments from four players — defensive backs Dee Miller and Marcus Thomas, offensive lineman Darryl Miller and defensive end Karman Saulsberry. Nineteen years later, the Warriors have flexed their recruiting reach across the country, […]

The baseball ‘Bows are heading to the Golden State for the third time in advance of this weekend’s non-conference series against Fresno State. The visiting baseball locker room should be familiar. That’s where the UH football team used to get ready before games at Bulldog Stadium. Logan Pouelsen has been cleared to pitch, and Neil Uskali is expected to receive clearance. * * * * * In 1998, Fred vonAppen was the head football coach, kids were playing with their […]

UH will benefit from new NCAA rule

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2018

Hawaii reliever Colin Ashworth’s collegiate career ended when he suffered an ankle injury. And now, thanks to a new NCAA rule, his career might not have ended. The NCAA now allows for a player who has a non-injury redshirt year to extend his career if he misses another season because of an injury. Previously, a player had to miss two years because of an injury to apply for a sixth year. Ashworth, who redshirted as a freshman at Arizona State, […]

Not in my house

By Stephen Tsai on May 7, 2018

One of UH’s proudest days also is one of the most conflicted. Because of the commencement ceremonies this Saturday, Les Murakami Stadium is not available for the UH baseball team that night. Apparently parking is the issue because the ceremonies will be at Stan Sheriff Center. The Ching Athletic Complex and Murakami Stadium are used as lei-gifting areas. The ‘Bows have to fill their schedule in a certain time frame. The ‘Bows have booked every weekend of their schedule. The […]

The ‘oops’ defense

By Stephen Tsai on May 5, 2018

We’re all human. We all do stupid things — mostly inadvertently, sometimes intentionally. Oregon State got busted doing a not-so-cool thing. For a civilized society to exist, there has to be some order. The rules of being a dude include: 1) Don’t pass gas in my car. 2) Don’t touch the fries on my plate. 3) Don’t send recruiting brochures to my players. When caught, the Dude Book offers two options: Lie or cry. Politicians, celebrities, co-workers, the Target cashier […]

Oregon State accused of recruiting UH players

By Stephen Tsai on May 4, 2018

Oh, dam. Oregon State staffers have been busy Beavers, sending out recruiting material, including invitations to the spring game, to prospects. But, oops, the material allegedly was sent to UH players at a Manoa campus address, according to a tweet from UH coach Nick Rolovich. It is against NCAA rules for a school to contact a player who has signed a national letter of intent with another school. The players’ names were redacted in Rolovich’s tweet. Rolovich tweeted: “My apologies […]
