Warrior Beat: “Stone-cold … gamer”

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2018

When asked to describe freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann said: “He’s a great kid. He’s got magic. He’s just a stone-cold frickin’ gamer.” * * * * * OK, we know the situation. A player can redshirt if he does not play in more than four games in that season. Cordeiro has played in three games. There are two games remaining — the regular-season finale against San Diego State and the bowl game. Play him or don’t […]

Warrior Beat: Manoa wrap-up

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2018

Deepest apologies, but it’s been a hectic week. So, in review: On Wednesday, post player Zigmars Raimo celebrated his 21st birthday. In what is a UH basketball tradition, the birthday honoree is serenaded and then presented with a cupcake. And, yes, you’re not having a flashback. As part of the practice rotation, the ‘Bows took a turn this week in Klum Gym. And, yes, it’s still as stuffy as it was back in the sweaty heyday. So, where are the […]

(They’re located on the 40, right behind the UH bench.) To enter the drawing, please post: I want the tickets! Two rules: 1) It’s just the tickets, NO airfare. 2) Enter as many times as you wish. Tom will pick the winner. DPK will make sure the blog hosts mails the […]

Warrior Beat: Hey, ’19

By Stephen Tsai on November 13, 2018

Yesterday’s pledge from a former 4-star athlete — back/receiver Melquise Stovall — further boosts the Warriors’ 2019 recruiting class. Stovall was at California for two years before enrolling at Riverside City College this semester. Stovall, who can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, was rated as the nation’s No. 6 all-purpose back as a Paraclete High senior in 2016. He had committed, then de-committed to USC, before signing with Cal. UH has first-burn knowledge of Stovall. He scored a TD […]

Following today’s 90-minute practice, slotback John Ursua was told he was one of 11 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. Ursua leads the nation in touchdown receptions (15). He is fourth in receiving yards (1,161), sixth in receiving yards per game (105.5) and ninth in catches per game (7.2). Ursua also demonstrated his new look — a haircut that left a small tail. UH has set up a Web site for Ursua: Ursua5.com

By Stephen Tsai on November 11, 2018

Ryan Woolridge amassed 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead North Texas to a 68-51 victory over the UH in the final round of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic. UH falls to 2-1. * * * * * The Mean Green did not play nicely in the first half, storming to a 35-17 lead. Even without their best player, the Green effectively attacked the rim and kept the ‘Bows out of their usual offensive flow. The […]

Game Night: UH vs. Humboldt State

By Stephen Tsai on November 10, 2018

Eddie Stansberry buried five 3-pointers to lead the Rainbow Warriors to a 90-54 rout of Division II Humboldt State. The last dramatic moment was midway through the first half, when the ‘Bows held a 13-11 lead. But then the ‘Bows went on a 20-0 surge to end all suspense. Jack Purchase added 15 points, with all of his points coming on 3s. * * * * * The ‘Bows seized a 47-21 lead in the first half. After an uneven […]
