UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso announced that Dylan Thomas will be the Rainbow Warriors’ opening-night starting pitcher. Thomas, a fourth-year junior, led the Big West with 14 saves last season. He turned down an offer to sign with the Minnesota Twins this past summer to return to UH. In preseason training, Thomas has cross-trained as a starter and reliever. Warriors on the recruiting trail

Deep in the heart of Texas, UH coach Nick Rolovich is looking to fill some of the remaining spots of the 2019 recruiting class. There are about four assistant coaches working the islands, with the rest on the mainland. Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon has shuttled between California and Arizona. Coaches will be back in town this this Friday for the second weekend ahead of the Feb. 6 signing period.

Grey Ihu, a former Pac-Five sprint champion, has joined the Warriors as an inside receiver. Here’s the skinny: > He is 6 feet and 180 pounds. > He will have three years to play three UH seasons. > As a junior in 2016, Ihu won the state championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Chance Kalaugher, a former two-time All-State basketball player, has joined the UH football team. Kalaugher, a 2016 Kaiser High graduate, is 6 feet 6 and 230 pounds. He is projected to compete at defensive end. He also is a consideration as a jump-ball receiver in goal-line situations. As a Kaiser junior and senior, Kalaugher was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 team. He earned a reputation as an active defender and vicious dunker.
