Tee time

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2013

We could sit around and dissect the first seven games of this UH football season. We could weigh in on the Sean Schroeder-Taylor Graham debate. We could even try to look up the weather in Logan, Utah. To all those, this blog host says: Nah. Instead, Let’s have a contest. (Jesse) James designed and donated this T-shirt: Please post: Tee it up! Avis will choose a winner.

Onward

By Stephen Tsai on October 27, 2013

After last night’s homecoming loss, when yet another comeback literally fell incomplete, the Rainbow Warriors are left to ponder: • Sean Schroeder or Taylor Graham? • The Warriors feel the need to run, but the running game needs help, mostly likely a set-up from the passing game. • The Warriors have struggled exiting the intermission. On the opening drives of the third quarter, they average 3.4 plays for 6.0 yards and 1 minute, 14 seconds of possession time. Their overall […]

Not sure how to spell the sound of a whistle — tweeeeet? — but the second half of the Rainbow Warriors’ regular season starts today. Will things be different? Better? Share your thoughts. Share your updates. Share your updated thoughts.

Schroeder to start against CSU

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2013

Coach Norm Chow announced that quarterback Sean Schroeder will take the first UH snap in tomorrow’s homecoming game against Colorado State at Aloha Stadium. Chow said there will be roles crafted for Woolsey and Graham against CSU. The quarterbacks were notified of the plans this week. It will be Schroeder’s second consecutive start officially, although he probably should have been credited as the starter for the San Jose State game. In the opening formation, Ikaika Woolsey was at quarterback and […]

The Sack Man

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2013

In Norm Chow’s 40 years of coaching, there were two opposing defensive linemen who forced Chow’s staffs to change their usual blocking schemes — Dwight Freeney and Al Noga. “You couldn’t block them the way you would normally block a scheme,” Chow said. Freeney was “impossible to block,” Chow said. Chow said Noga was comparable, particularly as a pass rusher. Chow announced that Noga — a UH graduate and All-America defensive lineman who played seven NFL seasons — will be […]

The quarterback draw

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2013

The referee usually has to be alerted when an offensive lineman will be used as an eligible receiver. The alert now is that Sean Schroeder, Ikaika Woolsey and Taylor Graham (and, possibly, Jeremy Higgins) will be eligible quarterbacks for Saturday’s homecoming game against Colorado State. Asked which quarterback would play, head coach Norm Chow said, “All three. Why not?” Indeed. Why not? * * * * * There apparently is a bad case of flu-like symptoms spreading through the team. […]

Band of brothers

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2013

This week — and for the rest of the season — the Rainbow Warriors will be wearing a green “Play Hard” wrist band. The players wore a similar band last year. The re-issue is symbolic of each players’ renewed pledge to the team. * * * * * It all begins up front. Fittingly, this week’s co-captains are defensive end Beau Yap and offensive guard Kody Afusia. * * * * * The “Pit” is the sideline area where injured […]

Wily to rest

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2013

It appears that running back Faga Wily, who continues to experience problems from a concussion, will be shut down for the rest of the season. Wily provided a boost to the power running game in Joey Iosefa’s absence in the first two games. But he hasn’t played or practiced since suffering  a concussion during a bye-week scrimmage. Steven Lakalaka, Diocemy Saint Juste, Marcus Langkilde and Willis Wilson will split reps, with the hope that Iosefa will join the rotation in […]
