That’s rich

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2013

It was 1999 when former UH basketball player Micah Kroeger and his future wife walked into our sports department and noticed my desktop computer. “It doesn’t have a mouse,” she said. Then she noticed: “The screen only has two colors.” There was no need to mention that the computer did not have access to the Internet. And that was the end of ignorant bliss. We were technologically poor. The Rainbow Warriors are learning how the Pac-12 lives while training this […]

Salt Lake City, Utah — Insisting his public comments were misinterpreted, University of Hawaii football coach Norm Chow said he is “fully capable” of doing his job and has no intention of quitting. “I’m not going to quit ever,” said Chow, whose Rainbow Warriors are 0-8 in the second season of his  five-year contract. “I preached not quitting to these kids. You expect me to quit? Are you crazy?” Chow sparked controversy when he told a group of reporters “I’m too […]

DT’s status uncertain

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors should have a better understanding today about defensive tackle Saui Matagiese’s knee injury. It was feared that he suffered ligament damage. He will undergo an MRI in Salt Lake City. He is expected to stay with the team the remainder of this 10-day trip. If he is unavailable to play against Navy, freshman Kennedy Tulimasealii will be promoted to his spot. Matagiese is one of the undisputed leaders of the team. His story — a Kauai native […]

LOGAN — Sure, the Rainbow Warriors arrived at the hotel at 2:35 this morning, and who knows when they got to go ne-ne. But this is truly a game day, one of the few early-afternoon ones. Cool weather, 2 p.m. kickoff, and newbies amazed they can see their breath. This is why they invented football. * * * * * Hey, I was hungry waiting for the team to show up:

Away they go

After a delay of more than 10 hours, the Rainbow Warriors departed LAX en route to Utah. With the 2-hour flight, 1-hour bus ride and 1-hour time change, they are scheduled to arrive at the hotel in Logan at about 2 a.m. Saturday — 12 hours ahead of kickoff for the game against Utah State. The Warriors were initially scheduled to depart LAX at noon on a charter flight. But the shootings at the airport forced a shutdown. The Warriors […]

Urban, Santos to travel

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2013

Two walk-ons — center Brenden Urban and kicker Ceejay Santos — are on the tentative 64-player travel roster for the two-game, 10-day road trip against Utah State and Navy. Urban, who has played well on scout team this fall, provides the Rainbow Warriors with an extra lineman for the practices between the two road games. Santos is Tyler Hadden’s understudy on kickoffs and point-kicking attempts. * * * * * Kickoff returner Bubba Poueu-Luna has a hamstring injury and will […]

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2013

Samson Anguay is expected to move to running back today as the Rainbow Warriors try to expand their options on offense. Now fully healed after two knee surgeries, Anguay has regained his quickness and quick-cut moves. He’s also a very aggressive blocker. This is Anguay’s second stint at running back. He was there early in training camp before moving back to receiver. * * * * * Avis has selected Not Nasti as the winner of the T-shirt. Please e-mail […]
