Sneak preview

By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors conducted a scrimmage yesterday for redshirts and developing (and under-used) players. Bubba Poueu-Luna and Samson Anguay had touchdown catches. Josh Gist had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Keelan Ewaliko made an acrobatic one-handed interception. On the return, Ewaliko displayed the shiftiness that made him a quarterback star at Baldwin High. Here’s the script: • 1st-and-10 from 40 — Ikaika Woolsey 8 pass to Josh Long • 2nd-and-2 from 32 — Jason Muraoka 4 run • […]

Monday musings

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2013

• The headline should have been: “Eli’s Coming” • OK, young people, there was this group called Three Dog Night that sang … • Back in the day, they used to determine the cold by the number of dogs used as bed warmers. For instance: “It will be a three-dog night in Laramie this Saturday.” • Tavita “Tui” Eli is a great “get,” as the recruiting folks like to say. • Eli will be a nice addition to a growing […]

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2013

Tavita “Tui” Eli, a lineman from Kealakehe High, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Rainbow Warriors. Eli can play both sides of the line, but said he has been told he will compete as an offensive lineman. It’s a key recruit for UH, which is looking to restock the offensive line. The Warriors already have Dejon Allen, Elijah Tupai, John Wa‘a and R.J. Hollis in the wings. Here’s Eli’s highlights: Eli video. * * […]

Game day: San Diego State

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2013

Questions, questions. Can the Rainbow Warriors get their first victory of the season? What will Joey Iosefa do for a hana hou following last week’s 35-carry, 191-yard performance? Do the Warriors have an answer for the Aztecs’ Adam Muema, who is averaging 135.4 yards per game and 5.79 yards per carry the past five games? Did we really look like that in the 1960s/1970s? * * * * * OK, everybody get up, raised a “Hurricane,”  and sing along to […]

Healthy returns

By Stephen Tsai on November 15, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors are optimistic that three ailing players — center Ben Clarke, defensive tackle Saui Matagiese and slotback/punter/punt returner Scott Harding — will be available to play against at San Diego State. And if they’re available, they’re starting. Kody Afusia moved from left guard to provide the snaps at center this week. Clarke, who had knee issues, is expected to make his 22nd consecutive start, the longest active streak among the Warriors. Even if Matagiese can’t go the distance, Marcus […]

“Ukulele Boi”

By Stephen Tsai on November 14, 2013

Byron Hahn-Morin loved his family, his friends and music. He respected elders, youngsters and those his own age. As the self-styled “Ukulele Boi,” he entertained us with his music and inspired us with the belief that doing what you love best is the best way to live. He was 21. He will be missed. Deepest sympathies to Liz Kauai and her ohana. * * * * * Please click to watch Ukulele video: Ukulele Boi * * * * * […]
