Warrior Beat: Nose tackle earns Hawaii football scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on April 16, 2019

Today’s practice had just ended but there was one more point to be made. In the post-practice circle, coach Nick Rolvich awarded a scholarship to nose tackle Azia Se‘ei. It comes at a perfect time. The help Se‘ei receives through the GI Bill — his father was in the Navy for more than 25 years — was set to expire this summer. Se‘ei is set to earn a bachelor’s degree in May 2020. Se‘ei also has been playing on the […]

Junior college guard commits to Hawaii basketball

By Stephen Tsai on April 15, 2019

Two days away from signing day for basketball prospects, the Rainbow Warriors secured a commitment from a junior-college guard. Junior Madut is a 6-foot-5, 185-pound sophomore from Eastern Florida State College. He was the captain for a team that went 28-8 this past season. He averaged 9.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists while defending several spots. Madut was born in Sudan, grew up in Australia, and attended the DME Academy, a prep school in Florida, before joining EFSC. Madut’s […]

Warrior Beat: Middle schoolers, “GOT,” hoops banquet

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2019

Things are getting busier and busier on the Manoa campus. Yesterday marked the Warriors’ first “Middle School Day.” While most schools have “Junior Days” for high school students wishing to learn more about their institutions (and football programs, of course), UH had an open house for middle school students. The emphasis is that no matter your future aspirations, every class in high school counts. Too often when students are considering college, they are hindered by poor grades as freshmen or […]

Warrior Beat: Tanuvasa eligible to play in 2019

By Stephen Tsai on April 12, 2019

Every so often, the NCAA does the right thing. And that happened this week when the NCAA approved a waiver that allows Eliki Tanuvasa to play for the Warriors this season. The rule is a player has to redshirt after transferring between NCAA Division I schools. After a semester at Eastern Illinois, an FCS program, Tanuvasa enrolled at UH in January. The NCAA recognized Tanuvasa’s reasoning was legit — he came home to help his ailing father — and granted […]

Warrior Beat: Smart approach

By Stephen Tsai on April 10, 2019

After every spring practice, receiver Jared Smart runs a go route to the neighboring soccer field where he fields “passes” launched from the JUGS machine. With the sun at an unforgiving angle and the fatigue from a two-hour practice, it is a challenging time for Smart to work on his focus and receiving skills. “You have to put in the extra work,” Smart said. “That’s the path my dad took. I try to do the same things he did. I […]

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2019

Kahuku High defensive back Nalu Emerson has signed with the Warriors. Here are the details: > Emerson is 6-1 and 205 pounds. > He graduates from Kahuku in May. > He was named to your favorite newspaper’s 2018 All-State third team. > He projects to compete at safety for the Warriors as player who can play in coverage or mix it up in the box. > “Choosing Hawaii was a no-brainer for me,” Emerson said. “Honestly, I feel they’re on […]

Warrior Beat: The gang’s (almost) all here

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2019

In a spring practice that turned into a mini reunion, five former UH coaches attended today’s 2-hour workout on the grass field. June Jones, who has been in town since the beginning of the year, leaves this weekend for his third season coaching the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Dan Morrison, a former UH quarterbacks coach, has been observing spring practice. Morrison has decided not to return to Hamilton this coming season. Former UH coaches Kanani Souza, George […]

Warrior Beat: Trey time’s a charm

By Stephen Tsai on April 3, 2019

Trey Larsen aced a walk-on tryout more than a year ago, earning a slotback’s spot on the Warriors’2018 spring roster. But his work in those practices and the offseason program did not result in a spot on last year’s team. Undaunted, Larsen participated once again in last month’s walk-on tryouts. He initially was not put on the callback list. But this week, he has rejoined the Warriors — as a cornerback. * * * * * The unlikeliest hero — […]
