Mission statement

By Stephen Tsai on December 14, 2013

When BYU ruled the WAC in the 1980s and 1990s, opponents groused about playing against much-older players. The Mormon church administers BYU, and under the old rules, a player could spend a year at BYU, go on a two-year mission, and return as a 21-year-old sophomore or second-year freshman. (The eligibility standard has changed and now a man can go on a mission at age 18.) UH — as far back as Kaulana Noa’s recruitment in the mid-1990s — found […]

Utah receiver commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 13, 2013

Mack Richards, a multi-skilled receiver/returner from Utah’s Alta High, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors, according to his father, Bill Richards. Richards will be on a delay route to Manoa. He plans on serving a two-year church mission after his Alta High graduation in June. After that, he will join the Warriors in time for the 2016 season. Richards is a little taller than 6-1 and weighs 190 pounds. Despite an injury, he finished the 100-meter sprint […]

Wynn-Win situation

By Stephen Tsai on December 12, 2013

Calculus is hard. Figuring out why there’s so much construction is a brain-teaser. But filling the vacancy on offense on the UH coaching staff? Not so difficult. Sure, there could be a chinstrap-dropping candidate when all of the applications have been received. But it would be logical — and economically feasible — to promote Jordan Wynn from graduate assistant in charge of quarterbacks to quarterback coach. Marketing folks would prefer a “name” to boost — or, at the least, maintain […]

John Wilbur

By Stephen Tsai on December 11, 2013

The blog host has led a surreal life, and one of the, um, surreal-est (?) moments occurred several years ago in a Kahala hotel. In a suite, the blog host found himself entertained by two rat-a-tat-speaking guys. One was the actor Sean Penn, the other was gonzo writer Hunter S. Thompson. It was during their dialogue when the blog host noted: “Dammit, John Wilbur.” John Wilbur , who recently died, was a Stanford graduate, a professional football player, an activist […]

Kaumeyer, Tuioti dismissed

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2013

UH coach Norm Chow confirmed defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer and linebacker coach Tony Tuioti will not be retained for the 2014 season. Both were on one-year contracts that run through March 31. “I just want the players, coaches and fans to know that I appreciate the opportunity to coach at the University of Hawaii,” Kaumeyer told the Warrior Beat. “I’ve really enjoyed living here in the community and being a part of the Warrior family.”

The public is invited to today’s “Celebration of Life” ceremony for running back Willis Wilson. It begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Teammates, coaches and Pastor Joe Onosai are scheduled to speak. Wilson died Nov. 30 of an apparent drowning off Sandy Beach. He was 21. * * * * * In this morning’s wee hours, coach Norm Chow began one-on-one interviews with each of the more than 100 players. Each session is scheduled for 15 minutes, […]

Cornerback commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors filled a key need this morning, securing a commitment from shut-down cornerback Cesar Fermin of Moorpark College. Fermin is 5-11 and 170 pounds. He had four interceptions this past season. Fermin has met the requirements to transfer without a pause. He will enroll at UH in January, and participate in the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program (beginning Jan. 29) and spring training in April.
