Aloha, 2013

By Stephen Tsai on December 31, 2013

It’s time to close the proverbial book on 2013. It was a year of good times, rough times, happy times and fun times. The blog will be closed the next two days. So spend time with loved ones, give a call to someone who needs a friend today, and, most of all, grab a bunch of clothes you don’t want and go to Goodwill. Today is the last day to collect tax deductions for 2013. Happy holidays, and celebrate the […]

Wake-up call

By Stephen Tsai on December 30, 2013

The volleyball Rainbow Warriors were awakened today to the sound of: GET READY! Yep, to start the final day of training camp at Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam, the Warriors were involuntary participants in a morning exercises. It was part team bonding, part follow-directions drills. The Warriors marched, in formation (some wore slippers), and then competed in a precision-drill contest. Brook Sedore, a Canadian, was the winner.

LB coach candidates: 199 and counting

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2013

There are 199 applicants for the Rainbow Warriors’ soon-to-be vacated linebacker coach’s job. That number is expected to grow when HR personnel check the mailbox tomorrow. Two weeks ago, Tony Tuioti was told he would not be retained as linebacker coach after his contract expires in March. This past Friday was the first day UH officials could review the applications. There probably was a delay in some deliveries because of Christmas. (We won’t mention the brown trucks.)

UH to HPD

By Stephen Tsai on December 28, 2013

Former UH center Bronson Tiwanak and defensive tackle/running back Siave Seti were among the 31 members of the Honolulu Police Department’s 175th recruit class to graduate last night. Congrats to both, who were classy players who filled their roles with enthusiasm and without complaints. * * * * * Linebacker Drake Miller, who redshirted as a freshman this past season, requested — and received — a release from his UH scholarship. Even with the release, he cannot receive another scholarship […]

Warriors land a rush end

By Stephen Tsai on December 27, 2013

UH’s football defense is getting more athletic. Jahlani Tavai of California’s Mira Costa High has pledged to accept a UH football scholarship and compete at rush end. Tavai said he is 6-3, 235 pounds and can run 40 yards in 4.65 seconds. Tavai also is a skilled volleyball and rugby player. Tavai played tight end and nose tackle at Mira Costa. But with his first-step quickness, agility and strength, Tavai projects as a stand-up end/linebacker for the Rainbow Warriors. One […]

Please hand the letter-opener

By Stephen Tsai on December 26, 2013

Tomorrow is the first day applications may be reviewed for the two soon-to-be-vacated, full-time positions on the UH football coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer and linebacker coach Tony Tuioti were told they would not be retained after their contracts expire in March. Both coaches, like all UH-Manoa assistant coaches, are on one-year contracts. They will continue to receive semi-monthly paychecks through March unless they are hired elsewhere before their contracts expire. There does not appear to be an immediate […]

Happy holidays

By Stephen Tsai on December 24, 2013

Wishing each of you — the naughty and the nice — a joyful and peaceful holiday season. Blog will be closed until Thursday. But not to worry. There won’t be any recruiting or coaching updates during that time. So, enjoy time with loved ones. Or, if not, spend time with those who need good cheer. At the least, don’t stand under hotel balconies. Cheers!

Texas prep safety to join UH

By Stephen Tsai on December 23, 2013

Dany Mulanga, a safety from Trinity High (Euless, Texas), told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from the Rainbow Warriors. Mulanga said he is 6 feet 4 and 206 pounds. He said he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds a year ago, but “I think I’m faster now.” Mulanga received offers from Utah State, New Mexico, Louisiana Tech and Montana State. He participated in the All-Poly camp at Euless this past summer. It was there, he […]
