By Stephen Tsai on February 2, 2014

Barring any late changes — and USC is pressing Punahou quarterback Larry “Tui” Tuileta to join as a “preferred walk-on” — this is the Rainbow Warriors’ tentative 2014 recruiting class: Transfer: • Jeremy Castro, linebacker, UCLA Recruits:  • Tavita “Tui” Eli, offensive lineman, Kealakehe High • Marquis Fairchild, defensive end/linebacker, Chaminade Madonna Prep (Florida) • Cesar Fermin, cornerback, Moorpark College • Kaau Gifford, defensive tackle, Kamehameha Schools • Jerrell Jackson, cornerback, Haynesville High (Louisiana) • Darian Josey, wide receiver/cornerback, Boynton […]

No rest for the Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on February 1, 2014

Rain and darkness did not stop the Rainbow Warriors from participating in this morning’s offseason conditioning drills. When the schedule was posted, there were no objections, even though it meant the players were required to report by 5:45 a.m. They brought two pairs of shoes — a pair for Ching’s turf, another pair for workouts in the weight room. “The goal in the winter is to set the stage for the summer,” said Gary Beemer, the Warriors’ strength and conditioning […]

Home stretch

The shape of the Rainbow Warriors’ 2014 recruiting class will be solidified — or close to it — with this weekend’s recruiting visits. UH should know in two days whether it will be a Super Sunday.

Beemer stays for the “long haul”

By Stephen Tsai on January 30, 2014

Gary Beemer has turned down an offer from a BCS school and will remain as the Rainbow Warriors’ strength and conditioning coordinator. “I’m here for the long haul,” Beemer said. Beemer was hired last May to work exclusively with the football team. “It’s tough here, and I didn’t want to contribute and be another letdown for the guys,” Beemer said. “It would have been really bad timing for coach Chow to bring in a replacement and hire somebody else. I […]

“This is just like Christmas morning”

By Stephen Tsai on January 29, 2014

On the first pre-dawn of the offseason conditioning program, strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer implored the offensive players to get through the drills at Ching field. “This is just like Christmas morning,” Beemer said of the first phase. “You’re walking into the living room to open your presents. This time, the weight room is your present.”   * * * * * And for Rainbow Warrior volleyball fans . . .   And the breakfast of champions . . .

Chilly reminder

By Stephen Tsai on January 28, 2014

AccuWeather predicts a high of 36 degrees for Sunday’s Super Bowl. If so, each ticket holder, according to ESPN, will receive a “warming packet” of hand warmers, gloves that allow users to text, and headphones to listen to the game. Two months ago, it was 25 degrees at kickoff for the Hawaii-Wyoming game in Laramie. There was no warming packet, but plenty of scoring — a combined 115 points. Just sayin’ … * * * * * Boynton Beach (Fla.) […]

Spring forward

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2014

Spring is in sight. Sort of. Although spring does not officially arrive for another 52 days, major league baseball opens training next month, UH describes this as “spring semester,” and, in two days, the Rainbow Warriors begin their countdown to spring practice with the beginning of the offseason conditioning program. The players received suggested workout  programs last month. They can work out officially under UH supervision beginning Wednesday. Some — like Taylor Graham, who is coming off a procedure on […]

The match won’t be televised and there’s a little competition from some event at Aloha Stadium, but the volleyball Rainbow Warriors play UC San Diego this afternoon in the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is at 5 p.m. The Warriors are 4-2 an 2-1 in the MPSF. Middle Taylor Averill is off to a good start. * * * * * The merits of the Pro Bowl can be debated. The thing is, it seems to make folks around here […]
