Warrior Beat: Hawaii football’s Max Hendrie to medically retire

Defensive end Max Hendrie is expected to medically retire from the UH football team. The status means Hendrie would remain on scholarship, but would be ineligible to play for the Warriors. Hendrie, who was born and reared in Sydney, was listed as a defensive end in the Warriors’ four-man front. He redshirted in 2016. Hawaii Football: Detroit Lions pick Jahlani Tavai in 2nd round of NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions today selected former Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai in the second round of the NFL Draft. As the 43rd overall selection, Tavai ties for the third-highest pick for a former UH player. Ashley Lelie was picked in the first round, 19th overall, by the Denver Broncos in 2002. The Warriors held their final full spring football practice today. There will be a light walk-through session on Friday afternoon. The spring game is set Saturday, with the circus-themed event beginning at 4 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex. Unlike previous years, this spring game will match two full teams — Mauka (first-team offense, second-team defense) vs. Makai (first-team defense, second-team offense). Hawaii men’s basketball: Graduate manager joining the Spurs

Garrett Jackson, who served as a graduate manager for the Rainbow Warriors this season, has been selected for an internship with the San Antonio Spurs’ video department. Jackson had multiple roles for the ‘Bows, including video analysis, scouting, recruiting, practice preparation, player development and nutrition coordinator. The NCAA’s evaluation period for football prospects began this week. UH relief pitcher Dylan Thomas has cut his hair in support of third baseman Ethan Lopez‘s father. As KHON sports director Rob DeMello first reported last week, Fernando Lopez is battling cancer. Before departing on the recent road trip, Ethan Lopez cut the hair he had been growing for 18 months in support of his father.
