Wade signs offer sheet

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2014

Rainbow Warrior volleyball coach Charlie Wade has signed an offer sheet for a two-year contract extension. The Board of Regents still must approve the offer. If accepted, Wade will be the Warriors’ head coach through the 2016 season. Wade is in the final months of a five-year contract he signed in 2009. * * * * * Fr0m yesterday’s unsupervised workouts: Center Ben Clarke:   * * * * * Slotback Quinton Pedroza:   * * * * * Wideout […]

Crossing the line

By Stephen Tsai on March 5, 2014

Kory Rasmussen is indeed making the move from defensive line to offensive line. While redshirting in 2013, Rasmussen practiced as a defensive tackle after transferring from Colorado. Rasmussen is a 2012 Kamehameha Schools graduate. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining. There were considerations about moving Nick Childs to offense, too. But Childs will remain on the defensive line for spring ball. * * * * * Offensive linemen David Griffin and R.J. Hollis read to students at Maemae Elementary […]

Sedore wins national honor

By Stephen Tsai on March 4, 2014

Opposite attacker Brook Sedore was named the national volleyball player of the week. He had 46 kills in a two-match sweep of UCLA this past weekend. * * * * * Running back Will Gregory is not expected to rejoin the Rainbow Warriors. Gregory, who led the Warriors in rushing as a second-year freshman in 2012, was placed on probation by the school last year because of a dormitory incident. After failing to comply with terms of the probation, he […]

OT benefits

By Stephen Tsai on March 3, 2014

Offensive tackle Sean Shigematsu was back walking three days after undergoing what was termed a “minor” knee procedure on Friday. Shigematsu, who can play both tackle positions and right guard, will be ready for the April 1 start of spring training. Mike Milovale, UH’s starting left tackle in 2013, has completed his NCAA eligibility. But the Warriors appear to be deep at offensive tackle. Shigematsu, Leo Koloamatangi, David Griffin and Frank Loyd have started at tackle. Freshmen John Wa‘a and […]

Sunday musings

By Stephen Tsai on March 2, 2014

Here are some random thoughts on a rainy Sunday: > UH’s men’s volleyball team is 4-2 against UCLA since John Speraw succeeded Al Scates as the Bruins’ head coach. During that span, the Rainbow Warriors are 3-0 in five-set matches. > Opposite attacker Brook Sedore and middle blocker Taylor Averill are deserving of All-America honors. Averill is a rare middle who also can set and play back-row defense. He made a nice pancake dig last night. > UH had to […]

Fan friendly

By Stephen Tsai on March 1, 2014

Minutes after the volleyball Rainbow Warriors upset No. 3 UCLA, fans were invited onto the Stan Sheriff Center court for a youth clinic. The thing is, the post-match activities aren’t unique. During every home series, there usually is an autograph session, with free poster giveaways. True, attendance has dropped, significantly, through the years. (Last night’s crowd was announced at 1,843, although it did not include late-comers, such as a visiting quarterback from Southern California.) But volleyball remains a rarity in […]

Northern exposure

By Stephen Tsai on February 28, 2014

The way former UH corner/returner Mike Edwards figured it, playing experience — any playing experience — is much needed this year. That was the thinking behind signing a short-term contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League rather than wait for a free-agent invitation to an NFL training camp. The CFL has two rookie offers: 1) A one-year contract with a team option for a second year, or 2) a two-year contract with a team option for a third […]

Wittek to visit this weekend

By Stephen Tsai on February 27, 2014

USC quarterback Max Wittek will begin a recruiting visit to Hawaii tomorrow evening. Arrangements were finalized this afternoon. Wittek is seeking to transfer after he earns a bachelor’s degree at the end of this semester. Graduates are free to transfer and play immediately without redshirting. Wittek has two seasons of eligibility remaining. Wittek visited Texas two weeks ago. He is expected to make his decision in May, after interested schools have completed spring ball and evaluations. * * * * […]
