UH lands O-tackle

By Stephen Tsai on May 1, 2014

One of the top offensive linemen in American Samoa has decided to join the Rainbow Warriors’ 2015 recruiting class. Eperone Moananu of Tafuna High told the Star-Advertiser he has agreed to accept a football scholarship, will sign in February, and join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2015 season. Moananu is 6-2 and 290 pounds. He plays tackle for Tafuna, which has won consecutive high school championships under Okland Salave‘a. UH line coach Chris Naeole, who is the point recruiter, was […]

Chasing the dream

By Stephen Tsai on April 30, 2014

Maybe something big will happen, maybe nothing at all. But Craig Cofer — a player without a permanent position — recently participated in an invitation-only workout with the San Francisco 49ers. He also is in line for a private workout with the Arizona Cardinals. At UH, Cofer worked hard and maintained an upbeat attitude despite shuffling between defensive end and tight end. There were a few practices where he wore a defensive jersey over an offensive jersey. In a couple […]

Special attention

By Stephen Tsai on April 29, 2014

It is a credit to special teams and the defensive secondary that Damien Packer and Josh Donovan will go on scholarship beginning this summer. Packer and Donovan — similar to Mike Martin, who earlier had been promised a scholarship — earned their way first as special-team players and then as safeties. Further back, each attracted attention with their scout-team work. One of UH’s inspirational placards is: Work like nobody’s watching.  Well, they are watching. Every play of every practice is […]

Exit meeting

By Stephen Tsai on April 28, 2014

Spring football officially ends with this morning’s team meeting at the UH athletic complex. The coaches will review the 15 practices of spring training, then detail the general goals leading to training camp in August. UH is expected to release a post-spring depth chart before the spring semester ends on May 16.

Spring review

By Stephen Tsai on April 27, 2014

Spring training has ended. Here’s what we’ve learned: > The  O did grow: For the first 14 practices, it appeared the quarterback often was on the move — rollouts, bootlegs, play-action, and so forth. That was emphasized with Ikaika Woolsey’s 60-yard scoring run in yesterday’s scrimmage. It came on a read-option, which has been in the playbook for two years but it appears to be more suitable for this personnel. With the formation spread and the threat of Joey Iosefa […]

Spring Fling

By Stephen Tsai on April 26, 2014

Who’s the No. 1 quarterback? What’s the progress of the new defensive schemes? Will Jeremiah Cockheran be the flag-footbal MVP? The answers will be revealed at today’s Spring Fling at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on the Manoa campus. The event wraps up four weeks of the Rainbow Warriors’ spring training. Here’s the schedule: Noon — Complex’s gates open. 1 p.m. — Youth clinic. 2 p.m. — Alumni flag-football game. 3 p.m. — UH warm-ups, drills. 3:30 p.m. — […]

Pare season

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2014

The numbers won’t be as large as in past years, but there will be a few players participating in spring practice who will not be invited to training camp in August. NCAA teams are limited to 105 players for training camp, although the Rainbow Warriors’ roster may expand on Aug. 25, the first day of the fall semester. That means tomorrow’s Spring Fling could be the final time in a UH uniform — until the fall semester, at least — […]

One last fling

By Stephen Tsai on April 24, 2014

Saturday’s Spring Fling will feature a scrimmage-like session instead of game. (There will be a scoring format to reward the defense for stops, turnovers, and so forth.) The format was selected after the coaches concluded there probably were not enough available players to split the roster into two teams. For instance, there were only nine healthy offensive linemen participating in Monday’s spring practice. On Tuesday, Trayvon Henderson was at cornerback in 11-on-11 drills. (Actually, that was a good thing; he […]
