Wittek can’t transfer to UH

By Stephen Tsai on May 16, 2014

USC quarterback Max Wittek can’t transfer to UH — or any other FBS school — this summer. Because of a personal situation, Wittek did not earn a bachelor’s degree after USC’s recently completed semester. A degree is a requirement for a player to transfer without restrictions, such as a sitting out a season at the new school. USC had approved Wittek to contact Texas and Hawaii — his top two choices — because the Trojans do not play the Longhorns […]

Erie tale

By Stephen Tsai on May 15, 2014

Cleveland’s best quarterback — at the moment — is not named Manziel. Former UH quarterback Shane Austin is having a breakout season in the Arena Football League, leading the Cleveland Gladiators to a 7-0 record (including 5-0 in games he starts). Austin told the Warrior Beat he’s having a blast — playing fast-break football, hanging out with teammates and, even, spreading things he learned in Hawaii. He  and former Warrior receiver Royce Pollard performed the haka for teammates. Austin also […]

By Stephen Tsai on May 13, 2014

Those questioning the high interest in UH sports should note that Ben Jay is probably the only athletic director with a radio show. The second segment of “The AD Show” will be broadcast on ESPN 1420 AM beginning at 6 p.m. Jay will answer questions from co-host Bobby Curran and listeners. *  * * * * Lost in the recent fiasco is that the late Reggie Carter was a wonderful person. Dan Hale, a former UH and Chaminade player, granted […]

Finals

By Stephen Tsai on May 12, 2014

It’s final-exam week, which means: > USC quarterback Max Wittek, who is planning to transfer, should be soon indicating his next school. Wittek needs to earn a degree to transfer  without restrictions. USC’s final-exam period is through Wednesday, with the school’s spring commencement ceremony on Friday. A Pac-12 defensive back also should be making his decision soon. His school already has completed its spring semester. > This is the last week as UH students for two of the football team’s […]

Mother’s Day; Meatoga to Browns

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2014

Much love to all the mothers. * * * * * Former UH defensive lineman Vaughn Meatoga said he has accepted an invitation to participate in the Cleveland Browns’ rookie mini-camp this coming weekend. He said he will receive his itinerary tomorrow. Meatoga had signed with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League. But when a former Lion decided to return, B.C. canceled Meatoga’s contract. Meatoga then received a call from former UH assistant coach Tony Tuioti, who works […]
