Not so fast

By Stephen Tsai on May 25, 2014

Let’s suppose you’re a UH head coach and you want to hire an assistant coach, graduate-assistant coach or, even, an administrative assistant. UH rules require the position to be advertised for 11 working days. Because tomorrow is Memorial Day, the advertising period would begin on Tuesday. The 11th business day would be June 10. But the next day is Kamehameha Day, a state holiday. After that, about five finalists must be interviewed. That can be done through telephone interviews on […]

Warriors add center, CB

By Stephen Tsai on May 24, 2014

The Rainbow Warriors have added all-state center Kaiwi Chung of Kamehameha Schools and cornerback Jamal Mayo of Laney College. Here’s what it means: > Filling needs: Cornerbacks and offensive linemen topped the 2014 recruiting wish list. Even though signing day was in February, the Rainbow Warriors continued to build the 2014 roster. Mayo is fast (he ran track at Oakland’s Skyline High), productive (10 interceptions in 18 JC games) and highly recommended (UH coach Norm Chow and Laney coach John […]

For the record

By Stephen Tsai on May 23, 2014

All men exaggerate. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating. But many exaggerate about 40-yard-dash times, SAT scores, income, sock size, Bruno Mars concert seats, post-prom experiences, fish weight, and so forth. A million claimed to be UH fans during the vonAppen years. Twenty thousand were there when Chaminade upset Virginia. So we shouldn’t be concerned about  Richard “Dick” Parson’s actual basketball experience at UH five decades ago. What is troubling is the incomplete archives of UH sports. It should not be surprising. […]

Mo football

By Stephen Tsai on May 22, 2014

Former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz  told the Star-Advertiser he has reached agreement on an two-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Moniz reports to camp on May 28. Calgary’s first exhibition game is June 14. Details of the contract were not released, but the CFL minimum is $50,000 per year. * * * * * While being recruited, Saint Louis School senior Devan Stubblefield received post-card sized letters from the UH football coaches. Some letters were […]

Knock, knock …

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2014

A week after competing in a mini camp in Florida, former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz is awaiting word on whether he will be invited to a Canadian Football League training camp. Moniz’s last game was in August 2012, when he suffered a torn MCL while playing for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League. Moniz said he is completely healed and in “top shape.” “I’m still chasing the dream,” Moniz said. “They can close the door once, twice, three […]

Demo model

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2014

Turn the volume down — way, way down — during games and practices, and  special teams coordinator Chris “Demo” Demarest resembles Billy Martin or Lou Piniella arguing a missed call. There’s stomping, arm-flapping and dirt-kicking. Beyond the madness, there is a mad genius, and former Warriors Brenden Daley and Charles Clay credit their current NFL employment in part to the Demo-strations. Of his first weekend with the Atlanta Falcons, Daley said: “Coach Demo and his teaching style made it a […]

Clay signs with Packers

By Stephen Tsai on May 19, 2014

Former UH defensive back Charles Clay won’t be going home for a while. After acing his tryout this past weekend, Clay signed a three-year contract with the Green Bay Packers. “This is a contract of opportunity,” said John Perez, Clay’s New Jersey-based agent. Clay was not selected in this year’s NFL draft. But he did well enough at UH’s pro day to earn an audition at the Packers’ rookie mini-camp this past week. Clay now is enrolled in the Packers’ […]

On the bright side …

By Stephen Tsai on May 18, 2014

The NCAA is investigating the men’s basketball program. The athletic department might finish as much as $2 million in the red this academic year. There are projects to be built but not enough money to pay for them. Coaches’ contracts are still moving along. But on the bright side, of UH’s 475 student-athletes, 21 have 4.0 GPAs and 59 percent have GPAs of 3.0 or better. That success has a lot to do with the support of coaches and administrators; […]
