Trading places

By Stephen Tsai on June 14, 2014

Former UH linebacker Aaron Brown makes his pro MMA debut tonight in  a fight in Mesa, Ariz. Brown, who was the St. Louis Rams’ seventh-round pick in 2012, said he has retired from football and is “all in” in MMA. He has been training since January in Gilbert, Ariz., and won his lone amateur fight in under 40 seconds. He will fight Casey Greene at 205 pounds tonight, with the goal of competing at 185 pounds eventually. There are other […]

Camp sights

By Stephen Tsai on June 13, 2014

Quarterback coach/play-caller Jordan Wynn threw well — and often. Receivers coach Luke Matthews ran routes. Defensive coordinator Kevin Clune hit the blocking sled, running backs coach Wayne Moses ran, linebacker coach Kurt Gouveia demonstrated a space-creating move, and so forth. Center Kody Afusia and defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii also led drills. The UH football clinics are show-and-tell sessions. Yesterday’s 5-hour camp was at Roosevelt High. The series continues with Monday’s camp at Waiakea High.  Camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest Kennedy […]

Roadie Warrior

By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2014

At the end of every football practice, head coach Norm Chow leads the Rainbow Warriors in a three-clap salute to athletic trainer Brian Wong. Wong probably deserves a standing ovation during the summer. At UH, tight budgets do not include room for student trainers during the offseason. For yesterday’s beach workout, Wong loaded containers of water and ice to Waikiki Beach. He had to bring enough to supply water and a sports-drink mix  for more than 80 players working […]

Sand blastin’

By Stephen Tsai on June 11, 2014

Waikiki’s most popular attraction this morning was more than 80 UH football players running, jumping and pirouetting on Hawaii’s most famous beach. The 90-minute workout drew tourists, aluminum-can scavengers, and the curious. Mark Tuinei’s widow watched. So, too, did a guy who asked: “Who are those guys?” When told they were the Rainbow Warriors, he smiled, and yelled encouragement. He was wearing an “H” cap and T-shirt. And this is how the Warriors spent the early part of a state […]

CFL’s Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on June 10, 2014

Oh, Canada. In the Canadian Football League, there are 12 players on each side, the field is longer and wider than American football’s field, and defense is spelled “defence.” But the CFL, which opened the exhibition schedule this week, is employers to these former Warriors: > Solomon Elimimian, linebacker, B.C. Lions > Paipai Falemalu, defensive lineman, Toronto Argonauts > John Hardy-Tuliau,  defensive back, B.C. Lions > Bryant Moniz, quarterback, Calgary Stampeders > Chad Owens, slotback/returner, Toronto Argonauts * * * […]

Ta‘amu not expected to return

By Stephen Tsai on June 9, 2014

Ed Ta‘amu is not expected to return to the Rainbow Warriors as an offensive intern. It is a family-based decision. Ta‘amu’s fiancee and his young son live in California. Ta‘amu assisted offensive line coach Chris Naeole the past year, helping prepare scouting reports and tutoring players. This past May, Ta‘amu, who was certified to recruit, and Naeole visited American Samoa. Tafuna High offensive lineman Eperone Moananu made an oral commitment to UH during that recruiting trip. Ta‘amu is a 1997 […]
