Taking care of business

By Stephen Tsai on July 1, 2014

UH’s athletic department can prove its business sense with today’s opening of the H-Zone merchandise store at Ward Centers. While the on-campus facilities — Stan Sheriff Center, Les Murakami Stadium and Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center — are run efficiently, UH has to chance to show it can handle the merchandise duties it has long craved. H-Zone appears to have a solid plan, including using corporate partners to defray costs. The corresponding Web site should boost the store’s reach. Now it […]

New (fiscal) year’s eve

By Stephen Tsai on June 30, 2014

Today is the last day of UH’s fiscal year, which means: > The music has stopped, and  UH’s financial net for the past academic year— pending a thorough audit, of course — is set. Impact? There probably will be more memos to tighten budgets. > This is the first day of the bridge program, two three-credit classes that run through the Aug. 1 opening of training camp. All the Warriors’ incoming freshmen are enrolled in the program. > The NCAA […]

Inside additions

By Stephen Tsai on June 28, 2014

During an algebra class at good ol’ Roosevelt High, a future blog host noted that inner beauty is what counts most. A female classmate then said: “Why do all ugly people say that?” The clumsy segue is that the state is spending a lot of money completing the Ching complex and building/renovating locker rooms and meetings rooms on UH’s lower campus. But while the projects are much needed, long overdue and aesthetically pleasing, there apparently isn’t enough money for new […]

Enter Sandmen

It’s tough enough to hit Waikiki Beach running — crawling, rolling, serpentining — at 5:55 in the morning. For this morning’s third beach session of offseason training, Pearl Harbor-Hickam leaders took control, putting the Warriors through drills that would put chiropractors on speed dial. UH adds JC back

By Stephen Tsai on June 26, 2014

The paper work  is being processed, and running back Dominique Small is expected to soon join the Warriors. The goal is for Small to gain admission for the July 7 start of Summer Session II. Here’s what the signing means: > Filling voids: The search for a running back began about a month ago when Aofaga Wily started to consider retirement because of medical issues stemming from a concussion suffered last September. In addition to losing Wily, walk-on Max Broman […]

Falcons and the showman

By Stephen Tsai on June 25, 2014

It’s summer break, sort of, for the NFL, but former UH linebacker Brenden Daley is living up to his nickname’s credo: A shark never stops. Daley will continue to work out in California until he reports to the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp on July 22. The Falcons, by the way, will be featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” From a chat with our blog, here are some “Shark” bites: On his plans: “I have a solid month to train and watch […]

Wily expected to retire

By Stephen Tsai on June 24, 2014

Running back Aofaga Wily is expected to retire from football because of medical concerns stemming from a concussion he suffered last year. If his petition is granted — he awaits approval from doctors and administrators — Wily will remain on full scholarship but not count toward the Warriors’ 85-scholarship limit for active players. “His health is way more important than football,” coach Norm Chow said. Wily was the state’s top offensive player in 2012 when he led Kahuku High to […]
