By Stephen Tsai on July 9, 2014

Frank Kainoa Abreu, a former Saint Louis School receiver, has joined the Warriors as a walk-on. Abreu played well before suffering a foot injury midway through his senior season in 2012, according to former Crusader coach Matt Wright. Abreu attended Notre Dame College in Ohio last fall. He then transferred to UH-West Oahu, where he attended the past spring semester. Abreu can play both wideout positions and slotback. Abreu’s father, Sean, is a former UH football player. Here are his […]

Two LBs contact Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 8, 2014

Two linebackers who are seeking to transfer — Oregon’s Tyrell Robinson and Nebraska’s Jared Afalava — have contacted the Warriors. Robinson, who is 6-4 and 220 pounds, was a 4-star recruit in 2012. He played nine games as a true freshman for the Ducks in 2013. Last month, Robinson requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. His twin brother — Tyree Robinson, a defensive back who redshirted in 2013 — will remain at Oregon. Afalava, who […]

By last count, all the returning Warriors are enrolled in Summer Session II, which begins today. With a sizable donation from the Waterhouse Foundation, Na Koa club is paying for the returning Warriors to attend both summer sessions (as well as incoming freshmen to attend the two bridge-program classes). The summer plan serves two purposes: 1) Players can accumulate credits to accelerate the path to degrees, and 2) players can train together in Hawaii. Which brings us to the football […]

The ol’ college try

By Stephen Tsai on July 5, 2014

By most accounts, Brenden Urban is a good person, good student (pre-law studies) and good teammate. By trade. Urban is a center. If he were asked to move to guard, he would — willingly and enthusiastically — sometimes with only minutes notice. There was a numbers crunch last year, necessitating Urban’s re-assignment to the scout team. He didn’t grumble. Instead, he worked hard, and later was added to the 64-player travel squad. But Urban, a Colorado resident who was at […]

Locker organizer

By Stephen Tsai on July 4, 2014

To all the old farts like me, remember what your room looked like when you were in your late teens and early 20s? Magnify that image by 18, and that’s what Stan Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff and men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade expected when they opened the dead-bolt-locked locker room. To their surprise, the locker room was as neat and clean as a Marine’s bed. The floors were spotless. Everything was folded and placed in the proper place. Strange, […]

UH set to add Washington D-tackle

By Stephen Tsai on July 3, 2014

Four years after committing to UH — and then de-committing to sign with Washington — defensive tackle Lawrence Lagafuaina is poised to join the Warriors. Lagafuaina earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington and has applied to a UH graduate program. If everything goes according to plan, Lagafuaina will be ready for the Aug. 1 start of training camp. Here’s what this means: > No waiting period: As a university graduate, Lagafuaina is eligible to play this coming season. > No […]

Wittek might join UH as walk-on

By Stephen Tsai on July 2, 2014

Former USC quarterback Max Wittek said nothing is final yet — there are more “conversations” with family, as well applications to be submitted and then accepted — but he acknowledged there is a “good possibility” he will join the Warriors as a walk-on. If it works out, UH would add an experienced quarterback at no cost. Wittek, who currently is not enrolled at USC, would need to redshirt this season. He then would be eligible to compete as a fifth-year […]
