Newcomers report today

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2014

The newcomers report to training camp today. It is not as dramatic a procedure because most have completed medical examinations and were briefed on rules and code of conduct. The freshmen have been attending classes during the bridge session that began in July. Strength/conditioning coordinator Gary Beemer had the newcomers in separate offseason workout program. As always, the freshmen will be allowed to compete for playing time. Red-shirt decisions won’t be discussed until the end of training camp. * * […]

Blog will change sites

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2014

The Warrior Beat soon will be changing addresses. The blog will be part of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s new site devoted solely to UH sports. I think the site will be called Warrior World, or something like that. (Hey, I don’t get all the memos.) I’ll post the new address as soon as I learn it. But in case the current site doesn’t link to the new site, just know we’ll still be in business. And, yes, I do mean “we.” Posters, […]

Pre-camp notes

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2014

With camp opening this weekend, it’s time to empty the notebook: > The offseason conditioning program ended last night — this morning? — with midnight weightlifting.  In a twist, the players were in costume. > Taz Stevenson, a Mililani High graduate, completed his transfer from Washington with notification of acceptance into the Pacific Islands Studies’ graduate program. Stevenson earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington, but needed to be accepted into graduate school to be eligible to play this season for UH. […]

Going the distance

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2014

Wideout Vasquez Haynes felt confident his broad jump — 10 feet, 3 inches — would stand as the best on a humid, windless Tuesday afternoon. And then there was a roar — a loud roar — when walk-on Terrence Sayles soared 10-4. A few minutes later, Marcus Kemp stuck a jump that was credited at 10-5. And then Haynes, initiating his version of the re-entry rule, gave it one more shot. After a dramatic pause … Haynes was ruled to […]

Big Island RB joins Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 29, 2014

There will be another Joey in the Warriors’ backfield this training camp. Joseph “Joey” Pacheco, a Big Island resident who played at Hartnell College last year, has joined the Warriors as a walk-on. “I love that kid,” Hartnell coach Matt Collins said. “I think he’ll be a guy, they’ll realize, who brings something to the table.” Collins said the speedy Pacheco was mostly a receiver, but he also can play running back, a position he will be used with the […]

Monday musings

By Stephen Tsai on July 28, 2014

It’s Monday, time to empty to notebook. * * * * * The Warriors’ first practice is a week away, on Monday, Aug. 4. * * * * * The Warriors should have a better understanding of the potential transfers. The NCAA limits training-camp rosters to 105, but they may expand on the first day of  UH’s fall semester (Aug. 25).  The Warriors will not be adding too many after training camp. There are only 110 lockers. Plus, the new […]

Apple fallout

By Stephen Tsai on July 27, 2014

Hawaii News Now’s Keoki Kerr reported that Tom Apple will be removed as UH-Manoa chancellor, an action that will impact the athletic department. Apple has been a supporter financially (absorbing the department’s eight-figure accumulated debt a year ago) and emotionally (he’s the first to greet the Warriors at Aloha Stadium). He’s backed projects, OK’d contracts, and didn’t send in the collectors when the budget was stained with red ink. In these difficult financial times, it’s always good to have friends. […]

Meal plan

By Stephen Tsai on July 26, 2014

The Warriors might have what seems like 99 problems, but a lack of food won’t be one of them. The Warriors will open their proverbial dining tables — and wallets — at least three times daily this year. Financial concerns were raised nationally when the NCAA changed legislation to allow schools to provide unlimited meals to student-athletes, including walk-ons. In the past at UH, the one training table each day was open only to scholarship football players. It is not […]
