Holding out

By Stephen Tsai on September 5, 2014

The Warriors prefer not to use the “R” word, especially around freshmen. But if possible, the Warriors would like to preserve the option of redshirting some newcomers. Some players already have been designated as redshirts, such as defensive ends Marquis Fairchild and Jahlani Tavai and defensive tackle Ka‘au Gifford. The Warriors can help development and depth if they are not forced to use such promising freshmen as wideouts Darrian Josey and Don’Yeh Patterson, linebackers Jamie Tago and Malachi Mageo, and […]

Warriors land O-lineman

By Stephen Tsai on September 4, 2014

Ben Northup, an offensive tackle from Glendora (Calif.) High said he has accepted a 2015 scholarship offer from the Warriors. Here’s what it means: > On the line: The 2013 recruiting class emphasized receivers; this year’s class focused on defensive backs. It appears the Warriors, with four fifth-year seniors on the offensive line, are seeking blockers for the 2015 class. The Warriors already received commitments from Jordan Agasiva of Mililani High and Eperone Moananu of Tafuna High. Gus Lavaka, who […]

Chow thanks the fans

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2014

Norm Chow empathizes with fans stuck in slow traffic and ticket lines this past Saturday. His own families members were caught, too. But he said he has been assured the glitches will be corrected, and that he is appreciative of the fans who turned out for the Washington game. “We are thankful for the fans and students who supported our players,” Chow said. “Our players felt the support. It helped them perform well.” * * * * * Tight end […]

Expansion plans

By Stephen Tsai on September 2, 2014

The Warriors are expected to expand the playing rotation for Saturday’s game against Oregon State. Because of the flow of the game, some available players were not able to be used. That list includes slotback Keelan Ewaliko, running back Dominique Small and safety Daniel Lewis. Ewaliko, who still is adjusting to offense, could ease the workload on slotback Scott Harding, who also is the punter and punt returner, and receiver Quinton Pedroza, who played a total of 95 plays at […]

Webster leaving KITV

By Stephen Tsai on September 1, 2014

One of sports journalism’s good guys — Jahmai Webster — is leaving KITV to join a Denver station. Webster started at KITV in 2010 as a weekend sports anchor and reporter. * * * * * The calendar says it’s Labor Day, but it’s no holiday for the Warrior players and coaches. The coaches were in the office at 4 this morning, analyzing video cutups and finalizing the game plan for Saturday’s game against Oregon State. The players had a […]

Warriors: Aftermath

By Stephen Tsai on August 31, 2014

It’s the day after, here is what we learned: > Remember the final fight scene in “Rocky III” when Rocky, using the rope-a-dope technique, goaded Clubber Lang to keep swinging away? Last  night, running back Joey Iosefa was Rocky.  He absorbed — and delivered — shots on each of his 30 carries. After the game, Iosefa dismissed the effects of his workload. “I wasn’t tired,” he said, insisting it was Washington’s defenders who were “gassed” trying to keep pace on a […]

Game day: Washington

By Stephen Tsai on August 30, 2014

Exactly nine months after the 2013 season ended, the  2014 season begins with today’s game between UH and Washington. For UH, there are these questions: > How will quarterback Ikaika Woolsey respond as an opening-day starter? > How will the defense, renovated under Kevin Clune, perform? > Can the Warriors slow Hau‘oli Kikaha? One thing is certain, the Warriors’ haka is as good as ever. Fans awaiting entry into last night’s volleyball match were able to view a haka rehearsal […]

Game week: On the clock

By Stephen Tsai on August 29, 2014

Sure, we’ve been running a countdown clock since Warrior World opened for business a month ago. (We promise, despite the Warrior Beat’s “mysteriously” vanishing posts, we’ve been at the new site for a month. Honest.) But with a day to go, we’re actually watching the clock. (Plus, with the vanishing posts, we had lost track of time.) Countdown to kickoff. * * * * * The Warriors went through this week’s final full practice yesterday. Because of training camp, the […]
