Hitting the break

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2014

After Saturday’s 21-12 loss to Colorado, ending the Pac-12 tour at 0-3, the Warriors head into their first break with next weekend’s bye. Despite numerous injuries — linebacker Tevita Lataimua, safety Trayvon Henderson and nickel corner Nick Nelson did not play against Colorado — the defense has played well in the first four games. On Saturday, the defense did not allow a second-half point. But defensive coordinator Kevin Clune said his defense needs to avoid lapses, such as second-quarter touchdowns […]

Warriors lose; Higgins injured

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2014

BOUlDER, Colo. — The Warriors lost to Colorado, 21-12, and they might be without quarterback Jeremy Higgins. Preliminary diagnosis is Higgins suffered a fracture in his left (throwing) hand. It’s a similar injury suffered by offensive lineman Kody Afusia in the opener, only Higgins, obviously, is a quarterback. The Warriors missed chances, particularly in three trips into the red zone. Tyler Hadden scored all of UH’s points on four field goals. The Warriors depart tonight to the West Coast, and […]

Travel Day 2

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2014

BOULDER, Colo. — After staying overnight in Los Angeles, the Warriors were set to arrive in Boulder for a walk-through session this afternoon at Folsom Field. The weather is Oahu-like, in the 80s. * * * * * Our hotel is in a dead-end location. There is a crematorium to the left, a cemetery to the right.

Travel day

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2014

The Warriors practiced for about 90 minutes today, then departed this afternoon for the mainland ahead of Saturday’s road game against Colorado. As always, the 64-player travel roster was split this way: 30 on offense, 30 on defense, four specialists. And, as always, Scott Harding’s multiple roles gave the Warriors’ roster flexibility. UH is probably one of the few teams that can travel with two punters (Harding and Ruben Guzman) and two snappers (Brodie Nakama for FGs/PATs and Brian Hittner […]

Inspiration by perspiration

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2014

Like many UH-Manoa students, Jason Muraoka paid $5,300 this semester for tuition and school expenses, including an activity fee that goes to the UH athletic department. Yep, Muraoka is one in about 20 who essentially pay to play football for the Warriors. Being a walk-on means not being able to work because football training is a full-time job. It means, after taking significant reps in spring training and fall camp, being assigned — again — to the scout offense. But […]

Warriors: Pac-12 tour continues

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2014

Perhaps schedule-makers will remember the impact of opening with five non-conference games in a row when planning future schedules. In days of yore, the Warriors would have a so-called marquee opponent at the end of the season. With league title games, including the MWC’s, occupying early December weekends, UH is forced to fill its non-conference schedule on the front side. That is why the Warriors are playing their third Pac-12 opponent in four weeks, and traveling to Houston for a […]

Warriors: “Omelet Monday”; Harding is POW

By Stephen Tsai on September 15, 2014

Scott Harding, who punted 11 times against UNI with remarkable results, has been name the Mountain West’s player of the week for special teams. * * * * * It’s the Monday following a Warrior football victory. That means it’s “Omelet Monday.” It’s a tradition that dates several years. The players usually have a choice of scrambled eggs as part of the training table during the season. But after victories, an omelet table is set up on Mondays. * * […]

Aftermath: UH beats UNI

By Stephen Tsai on September 14, 2014

It wasn’t flashy, but it was the Warriors needed: A victory. The Warriors tried flashy in the first two games, opening the playbook to pages rarely seen. But last night’s game was about field position (24 punts between the teams) and ball control (the Warriors ran 15 times on 16 first-down plays in the second half). Scott Harding, who recovered the on-side kick with 1:54 left, was covered with ice packs after the game. He took a beating, even as […]
