Back on the field

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2014

The Warriors will be back on the practice field this afternoon ahead of Saturday’s road game against Rice. Despite the bye, the Warriors had a full schedule last week, including three long practices and extensive meetings and video sessions. The Warriors did not practice the past weekend. But the coaches worked on recruiting, self-scouting and finalizing the game plan. For this trip, the Warriors depart Wednesday evening on a non-stop flight to Houston. They will have a full practice on […]

Bye day: Campus cleanup

By Stephen Tsai on September 27, 2014

Before there was an activity known as “Manoa Makeover,” there was this dilemma: For the Lower Campus, which the athletic department is required to maintain, there was only one department-employed worker assigned to clean the area. That meant picking up trash, pruning plants, tidying deposits made by feral four-legged friends … Enter softball coach Bob Coolen. His office is lint- and dust-free, easily acing any white-glove test. His carpet was vacuumed with the fibers in the same direction. The bats […]

Any given bye day

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2014

One of the fun things about bye week is the different players who get a shot. Yesterday, that was running back Pereese Joas. His turn with the regular offense was so unexpected that the media relations staff could not identify him. Despite joining near the end of training camp, Joas is not listed in the media guide or roster. But we remember Joas from his breakout performance at UH’s tryouts for walk-ons in February 2013. He had the fastest sprint […]

Quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey, Taylor Graham and Beau Reilly looked good in yesterday’s scrimmage-like session.

Back on the field

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2014

The Warriors return to the field today for a practice that will include a 30-play scrimmage-like session for developing players and redshirts. The hope is that some players will be able to fill roles for injured players and work their way into rotations. It also will be an opportunity for Beau Reilly, who was promoted to No. 3 quarterback following the season-ending injury to backup quarterback Jeremy Higgins. The Warriors practice today, tomorrow and Friday, then will have the weekend […]

Warriors: Looking ahead

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2014

The Warriors are spending part of the bye week on recruiting. But some of the answers already are in the program. Quarterback: Former USC quarterback Max Wittek is running the scout team during this redshirt season. Aaron Zwahlen joins next year after completing a two-year church mission. Running back: D.J. Riggins, who is grayshirting this season, joins in January. Slotback: John Ursua, who committed in February 2012, started his mission late. He joins next year. Here’s a reminder of his […]

QB Higgins’ UH career ends

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2014

It was going to be a great weekend for the Higgins family. Kaiser head coach Cameron Higgins led the Cougars to an upset of Kahuku. Tayler Higgins set — and served — the Rainbow Wahine to a sweep of Northern Arizona. And quarterback Jeremy Higgins started the second half in the Warriors’ road game against Colorado, completing his first two throws. But then Jeremy Higgins’ game ended when he landed awkwardly on his left (throwing) hand during a fourth-quarter sack. […]
