DJ fills lead role

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2014

Few noticed when defensive secondary coach Daronte’ Jones was promoted to assistant head coach the past spring. Perhaps, it was because UH did not announce Jones’ added role. And that appears to fit Jones’ style and personality. In Norm Chow’s absence, Jones is handling the head coach’s administrative duties. As always, Jones shares the credit, noting it is a collaborative effort amongst the coaching staff to fill in for Chow. “It’s not going to be a one-man show,” Jones said. […]

Thoughts, prayers for Chow’s wife

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2014

Head coach Norm Chow will remain on the mainland to be with his wife Diane, who underwent a procedure for a brain aneurism Friday evening at the UCLA Medical Center. Barring any unforeseen complications, Chow will return to Honolulu on Monday night. The Warriors usually have only meetings and conditioning drills on Mondays. Daronte’ Jones, the team’s assistant head coach, will handle Chow’s administrative duties during his absence. Jones will take Chow’s place on tonight’s “Inside Access” coach’s show on […]

Game day: Rice

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2014

Houston — It will be a matchup of 1-3 teams when UH and Rice meet today in a non-conference game. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Hawaii time. Here are the keys for Hawaii: > Fast start: Yep, it’s a cliche, of course, but the Warriors need to take advantage of what will appear to be a small crowd. Even if it were half full — and a fifth is more likely — attendance will appear to be slight in 70,000-seat Rice […]

Landing in Houston

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2014

HOUSTON — Ah, the heat … the humidity … it’s just another day in … Houston? The Warriors, who arrived early this morning, should be used to the muggy conditions after the past few weeks’ weather in Hawaii. It is expected to be breezier — Southwest’s version of tradewinds? — tomorrow. The Warriors will practice for about 90 minutes today, then head to a barbecue this evening.

Out of the ordinary

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2014

The Warriors, like every other college football team, adheres to a routine. For the Warriors, that means a brisk walk following the wake-up call on game day and specified meal times. But because of several factors, the Warriors depart this evening on a rare (for them) non-stop, red-eye flight to the Central time zone. The Warriors try to avoid overnight flights because it throws off sleep patterns, especially for players who have difficulty getting their Z’s on airplanes. The Warriors […]

Quick turnaround

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2014

It will be a quick turnaround for the Warriors, who will have 12 hours between the end of yesterday’s twilight practice and the start of this morning’s practice. Because of the past weekend’s bye, the Warriors were able to squeeze in a 70-minute practice at Ching field yesterday. On the usual Monday of game week, the Warriors would only have weight-training and conditioning drills. Yesterday, the offense and defense worked against the scouts portraying Rice’s schemes. The Warriors’ secondary should […]
