Proceeding with caution

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2014

At this point in the season, like in the pros and many other college programs, the Warriors have had to ease up on the ferocity of practices. For yesterday’s practice, the Warriors cut out two five-minute periods. They also put a few key players on limited-contact status. It makes sense. It gives players an additional day for their bodies to recuperate, as well as provide more practice reps for developing players. And the way things have gone, developing players need […]

Graham had all the right moves

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2014

Quarterback Taylor Graham is scheduled to undergo surgery today to repair a fractured right foot suffered against Wyoming. If his first start of 2014 was the last game of his UH career, Graham should be remembered as a player who did the right things, said the right things, and acted the right way. If he had any complaints, we’ll never know. If he pouted, we never saw it. If you don’t like him, something is wrong with you. There are […]

Iosefa faces suspension after DUI arrest

By Stephen Tsai on October 13, 2014

Running back Joey Iosefa faces suspension from team activities following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving yesterday morning. A decision on disciplinary action will be announced tomorrow morning after coach Norm Chow and athletic director Ben Jay meet. Chow is in Los Angeles with his wife, who is hospitalized while recovering from a brain aneurysm. Chow returns to Honolulu this morning. Based on precedent, Iosefa’s punishment will depend on how he plans to plead at his court appearance on […]

View from the top

The Warriors have the 48-hour rule — the time limit to celebrate or mourn a victory or loss. But for 144 hours, the Warriors can enjoy being atop the MWC’s West Division with a 1-0 league record. (Doesn’t the Washington opener, like Iselle, seem like it was ages ago?) So raise a cold Gatorade to: > Ikaika Woolsey, who rebounded from a slump and demotion, to rally the Warriors to their first MWC victory since November 2012. Leadership is about […]

Game day: Wyoming

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2014

This is what’s at stake: And this: Three keys for UH: > Score touchdowns: In a game of time possessions, opportunities are precious and few. (And, yes, I just had a flashback to the 1975 Mistletoe Ball’s final song, “Precious and Few.”) > Benneton Fonua: For the past 29 games, people have been saying: “Play Benny!” Tonight, Fonua makes his first start (in place of injured inside linebacker Julian Gener). It will be a rough-and-tumble sort of game. Fonua is […]

Air extensions

If anyone needs proof of the Warriors’ security in the Mountain West Conference, look to tomorrow’s game against Wyoming. Per an agreement with the MWC, the Warriors pay a visiting team from the Mountain time zone $175,000 in travel subsidies. The payment is intended for round-trip charter flights. But UH has no say in how the money is spent. That means UH can’t say, “Hey, Cowboys, we found this great deal on Travelocity …” Wyoming gets to keep the money […]

Gener’s demeanor will be missed

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2014

Maybe one of these seasons the Warriors will avoid an injury to a key player. This isn’t one of those years. Joey Iosefa, Jerrol Garcia-Williams … and now linebacker Julian Gener. Gener, who underwent surgery to repair a fractured right fibula on Tuesday, will miss at least a month. The Warriors will fill his spot, of course, with Benneton Fonua or Tevita Lataimua. Fonua achieved his first sack and interception of his UH career in the Rice game. Lataimua might […]

Warriors: Captain Carter

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2014

The Rainbow Warriors opened the 1991 season with a new quarterback and plenty of questions. But then Michael Carter, in his debut as the Warriors’ triple-option quarterback, rushed for 214 yards in a road game against Wyoming. In that game, Carter suffered a broken rib, a painful injury that caused him to grimace with every hit. The thing was, in that offense, the quarterback was hit nearly every play. Carter played with extra padding and grit the rest of the […]
