Thursday’s notes

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2014

Diane Chow is back home after spending more than two weeks recovering from a brain aneurysm at UCLA Medical Center. This is a positive step in her recovery. * * * * * Agenhart Ellis, who has deep ties to UH football program as a former player and father of a former player, gave the pep talk at the end of this morning’s practice. Ellis’ son — Agenhart Ellis III — is Punahou’s defensive coordinator. * * * * * […]

Coming to a theater near you …

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2014

It is understandable for a sub-.500 team to suffer a dropoff in home attendance. It is understandable for fans and their friends to watch a pay-per-view telecast in the comfort of their homes or garages. What should be a concern is when fans prefer to watch a UH game at a movie theater instead of Aloha Stadium. Sure, theaters offer relatively inexpensive admission ($12), more parking and shorter bathroom lines. Theaters offer stadium-styled seat, too. But there’s another place that […]

Back in Manoa

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2014

The Warriors resume practicing today in preparation for their two-game home stand against Nevada and then Utah State. After this, the Warriors will play three of their final four regular-season games on the mainland. Head coach Norm Chow was back in the office early this morning after spending most of the past two days with his wife, who remains hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center.

No plans to redshirt Reilly

By Stephen Tsai on October 20, 2014

The only red shirt Beau Reilly will wear will be the red jersey worn by UH quarterbacks during practices. Coach Norm Chow said Reilly, a 22-year-old freshman who has yet to appear in a UH game, is not redshirting this season. “We have six more games to go,” Chow said. “He knows that.” If healthy, Ikaika Woolsey remains as the No. 1 quarterback. But Chow said he hopes to craft specific plays for Reilly. Reilly practiced as the No. 1 […]

Seeking answers

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2014

Maybe it was the long preconference schedule. Maybe it was, well, whatever. The reality is the Warriors have numerous injuries that are taxing the active roster. No excuses, as they say, but this is how it probably will be the rest of the regular season. UH already has spent its bye. The next two UH games will be played at Aloha Stadium. Maybe that will help a team seeking to regain its rhythm.

Game day: San Diego State

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2014

SAN DIEGO — Ikaika Woolsey or Beau Reilly? If Woolsey is in good health, he’s expected to start. He was in good health during yesterday’s practice, taking most of the first-team reps. If Woolsey isn’t in good health, Reilly is ready to go. Reilly took most of the first-team reps during the past week. In either scenario, Eric Prater is No. 3. Prater was the scout quarterback yesterday. Because of the 64-player travel limitation, the Warriors had to improvise to […]

Setting up in San Diego

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2014

SAN DIEGO — The Warriors will have a modified practice this afternoon ahead of tomorrow night’s road game against San Diego State. For the second consecutive road game, the Warriors traveled on a non-stop flight to the city where the game will be played. There should be a sizable Hawaii following for this game. The hotel lobby has set up an H store. I’ll post photos after today’s practice session.

Lakalaka on track to play

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2014

It appears running back Steven Lakalaka has been cleared to play in Saturday’s road game against San Diego State. Lakalaka left the Wyoming game with what was termed concussion-like symptoms. But he reportedly passed baseline tests. He practiced this morning. The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon.
